Good piece, and I agree with the overall angle. Never mind the issues of one submarine. Rather what we see playing out is further marginalisation of operational reach for the Russian Navy, their modernization in nuclear powered hulls notwithstanding.

Large Russian enterprises are switching to three- and four-day work weeks, Russian media outlets report.

◾️ Uralvagonzavod - one of the world’s leading manufacturers of armored vehicles (including T-72 tanks) and Russia’s largest producer of freight railcars - is now operating below full capacity.
“The timing of this event makes it all the more curious after seven and a half years of wholesale AIS manipulation by the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) fleet,” Samir Madani, co-founder of TankerTrackers.com, told Splash today.

This is the third or fourth LPG tanker, that I have seen, using this spoofing method.

DAS has some exciting applications, but 2 things to note:
1. The reach isn’t unlimited - existing cables can’t suddenly become trans-Pacific arrays. And at Pacific depths they would need to be exceptionally sensitive to be useful. But in the North Sea and Baltic Sea it would be effective.
2. Cable companies aren’t going to be rushing to turn their cables into key targets in a conflict (although the ship may have sailed).

At Starboard.nz we’re using near-shore DAS systems to actively protect cables. There ability to detect grey-zone operations is a key strength.

The Pacific Islands Tuna Fisheries, the only ones worldwide that are in the green, have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to maintain private certifications, such as MSC, to prove themselves to EU consumers, yet their own fisheries are a mess. Pure hypocrisy

Don’t know who needs to hear this, but Russian Navy KILO class submarines transiting to/from Mediterranean on the surface are routine. NATO of course watches them closely, as in this photo.

Russia does have increasing difficulty maintaining a presence in Med but this in itself isn’t a big deal

It’ll be interesting to track the progress of the group - there’s normally photos as they go through the Singapore Strait and other choke points. The 46th flotilla got as far as Russia and West Africa, so it’ll be interesting to see where these vessels show up
