BREAKING

Dr. Jane Goodall has died. She was 91.

It is impossible to sum up the impact she has had on our world and on science in a social media post.

She lived a long and incredible life but I am devastated.

The first mass shooting made very few headlines. Damaged by war?
Here's Nigel Max Edge and Thomas Jacob Sanford.

Both committed mass shootings within 24 hours of one another. Two more cases of White on White crime.

Is it the fatherlessness in the White community?

Are they Inherently violent because of their race?

Or, is it the guns?

Sip it slowly. 🔥☕️

I hope not!
When I was at NIH and shutdowns loomed, it was discovered that the administration was planning to shut down PubMed. The head of NCBI called the powers that be and pointed out that this would threaten patient safety

Who knows what will happen now

Just in case, remember Euruope-PMC

This is good advice for now!
Any academic folks on H1B visas (even with stamps in passports) please get legal advice from your University attorneys before leaving the US.

Does anyone remember reading this? I read it many decades ago, but I still remember that it made a great impression on me. It was written by Sartre in 1936—food for thought right now.

Sometimes AI can be used to counteract “amateur science” faster than you can!

A 2024 study of nearly 2.5 million children in Sweden found no causal link between prenatal acetaminophen (Tylenol) use and an increased risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability.

On August 12, 2017, I staffed an aid station for the counter protest against the fascists who came to Cville. Nazis attacked the church we were using, and antifascists put their bodies between my patients and harm.
BREAKING: Trump says he is designating “Antifa” as a “major terrorist organization.”

Such a step being taken this way would be concerning enough, given what it actually is, but, given that Trump sees “Antifa” hiding in every corner of opposition, this could be an extremely alarming escalation.

If you don't know, this is a secondhand account of what measles subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is like.

What Measles Did to My Family
My mom always told me that measles was what made my sister sick. I was 8 when she finally explained the whole thing.

Another SSPE story.

Incredibly sad, but predictable. SPPE is a horrible 100% fatal, slowly progressing disease that is rarely ever seen in vaccinated kids. The prevalence has been predicted to be about 1/600 cases after a natural infection. You do the math; we are likely to see many more cases in the coming years.
Death from sub-acute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) in a child in Los Angeles
SSPE is a rare sequel of #measles infection that appears years after the initial infection, and is uniformly fatal. So sorry for this family. As things are going on the US, we'll be seeing more of these cases.

Answer to one of my questions. Statistics like this are not bad when it comes to diseases, but.....
Updating my analysis now that August data should be relatively complete.

Not great news...

The rate of investment of the appropriation is not increasing and it seems unlikely that the entire appropriation will be committed this year.

Student newspapers are an important source of information and opinions right now. This is an opinion piece from The Cavalier Daily, our UVA student-run newspaper.
CULLEN: Let's not make the U. like it used to be
Fortunately, there is a remedy for this that can produce a diverse student body without resorting to affirmative action based on race or gender. It is affirmative action based on socioeconomic status.

Thank God for student newspapers! Seems to be one of the few ways in which we can get real information about the ongoing government/university battle. In most places, the universities are hiding all information behind attorney/client privileges.

My quote of the day

Compassion is sometimes the fatal capacity for feeling what it is like to live inside somebody else's skin. It is the knowledge that there can never really be any peace and joy for me until there is peace and joy finally for you too.

Comment on the Fallows post
Confirming this for NIH. It is very, very bad inside the agency— and all of US medical research and universities are at risk.
Common theme of people I've interviewed recently. At universities, in research centers, in diplomacy, in the legal system, dealing with refugees or immigrants:

The reality inside is much worse than you would think from the outside.

.. and then there is this. When I was a graduate student in Sweden, we still had several cases of SSPE, a slow, deadly encephalitis. It is a horrible disease and only one of the complications after a natural infection. As we experienced this year, kids can also die quickly from this disease.
RFK Jr. claimed that there have been no successes coming from HHS in the past 40 years.

I beg to differ.

He and his HHS lackeys, Makary, Bhattacharya, and Prasad, who spread misinformation, will be personally responsible for the resurgence of vaccine preventable disease in the U.S.

Do wr have more work to do? ABSOLUTELY.

But everything RFK Jr. is doing will halt that progress.

I am old enough to have experienced several women suffering and dying from this disease. The vaccine changed this in a much more dramatic way than I could dream of (even as a virologist).
RFK Jr. went on Fox News today to claim that HHS has had “no successes” in the past 40 years.

I beg to differ.
