This Bowie song actually has a cover version! Edwyn Collins recorded it for the Starman album that came with Uncut Magazine #3 in 2003. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww24...

An odd little song that seems to fit in with the novelty of The Laughing Gnome. A blues-style song that features an oboe and a bassoon is more than a bit unusual.

This song is an unusual mixture, but what about Bowie isn’t. The band 3D Echo was brought in to lay down the track with Bowie who then added in some piano parts from Mike Garson. Roll that around with lyrics that talk about mobsters the Kray twins and you get this unique track.

Bowie & Eno are the only musicians on this track and each were using different, and at times opposing, cards to create their sections of the track. The song is a duel of real instruments vs synthetic. The song wants to be background music while another part strives to the foreground.
During the production of the album Brian Eno brought his deck of Oblique Strategies cards. These cards were filled with various ideas meant to inspire creativity. And this song made extensive use of the cards.

The issue here is while all the previous singles were up-beat dance numbers this is a more slow, soulful song with a complicated bass part and an unusual drum beat.
While the first three singles off of Let’s Dance were all top 10 hits this song barely made a dent in the charts, ending up peaking at #73 on Billboard.

Sorrow was also included in Bowie’s 1980 Floor Show: www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2EG...

He would perform it throughout the Soul Tour and then again during the Serious Moonlight Tour.

The song went to #3 in the UK and #1 in Australia. And in an unusual move in France the sides were swapped with Sorrow becoming the B-Side to Bowie’s cover of Jacques Brel’s Amsterdam.
Sorrow’s release was postponed due to Deram having re-released Bowie’s The Laughing Gnome which was #6 on the charts. Bowie performance on Top of the Pops was stopped by the Musicians’ Union stating he either had to record a new backing track in an hour, play it live, or cancel.
It was producer Ken Scott’s favorite track from the album and he recalled Mick Ronson struggling with the string arrangement due to the language barrier with the French musicians. Mike Garsons’ piano at the end was given a tremolo effect complements of Ken Scott sliding the fader control up & down.
Sorrow was originally recorded by the group the McCoys in 1965, and became a hit for the Merseys as their debut single in 1966.
Pin Ups was really my way of shaking off Ziggy completely, while retaining some excitement in the music. It really was treading water, but it happens to be one of my favorite albums. I think there is some terrific stuff on it. - Bowie

This is another of Bowie’s songs from this era that I enjoyed and was nearly knocked off my chair but how strongly it was criticized. They were slightly more kind to the original Omikron version: www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSIh...

Like much of the Hours album this song was written by Bowie and Reeves Gabrels for inclusion in the video game Omikron: The Nomad Soul, where it was used during the opening credits. Oddly this song was one of four songs from Hours that was never performed live.

While not an awful song by any stretch, it also doesn’t really stand out either. It is likely good news that this song wasn’t a hit. Because if it was Bowie likely would have become yet another British recording artist tapped to write and perform songs for Disney movies.
Both Hunt Sales & Reeves Gabrels of Tin Machine lamented Bowie’s attempt to make Let’s Dance II after spending so much time trying to leave that behind. In hindsight the two were right and Bowie’s style would lean away from typical pop music for much of the 90s.
This song was the 1st collaboration between Bowie & Nile Rodgers since the chart topping Let’s Dance album. But this single was not a success. After Bowie had spent years trying to distance himself from being a pop star it seemed jumping back into that world was not so easy.
