Naquin retired from the Navy in 1955 with the rank of Rear Admiral. He died in 1989, and is buried in section 5 of Arlington National Cemetery.

Naquin would never receive another command again. But he would survive one more sinking (the California, during the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor), a near-sinking (the New Orleans during the Battle of Tassafaronga), and be involved in the sinking of the Indianapolis.

Naquin was one of 33 officers, sailors, and civilians who survived the sinking. After 39 hours trapped beneath the waves, Naquin and his men were rescued in a daring rescue operation led by Lt. Commander Charles “Swede” Momsen (inventor of the “Momsen Lung”).

Oliver Francis Naquin (1904-1989).

In 1939, Naquin was a Lieutenant and skipper of the Sargo-class submarine Squalus. Squalus sank during a test dive when its main induction valve failed.
