You know, this is a horrible way to meet my neighbors.

My neighborhood is in the news for a horrible reason. But at the protests and vigils today, I saw humanity at its best.

People constantly distributing hand warmers in the subzero temps. People opening their homes and businesses. People setting out tables with supplies. People caring for each other.

🕯️ SHINE A LIGHT FOR MINNESOTA

Tonight • 7:00 PM CT

Step outside and light a candle — on our street corners, with our neighbors, for our communities & Alex.

Together we call for #ICEOutNow.

Today it came to my neighborhood. ICE killed Alex Pretti in a spot I've walked through hundreds of times in the 12+ years I've lived in Whittier.

Every day since this occupation started, there's been a new horror. It won't stop until we get them out.

With other businesses and workers throughout the state, I’m participating in today’s general strike to protest the ongoing ICE occupation of Minnesota: no work, no school, no shopping.

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

This is a fab little book for people who work on comics—it has helped me when I proofread for IDW—but, as I said when it first came out, I also think readers of comics would find it just as interesting! I certainly found it interesting as I copyedited it, and that was before I got the IDW gig!

Comics very often don't get a dedicated copyedit, and sometimes there's a good reason for that. But fixing spelling, formatting, and continuity issues before the text is lettered makes things SO much easier for everyone—and your letterer and proofreader will thank you.

A friend and I were talking about awkward stock photos again and I realized it's never a bad time to reshare this list of sites with free stock images that are both less awkward AND more inclusive in terms of the people in them. (It includes a great one for your fall vaccine coverage!)
Free Sources for Inclusive and Stereotype-Busting Stock Images — Madeleine Vasaly
One problem you’ll run into in almost any stock library is that a lot of images are pretty stereotypical and don’t tend to feature a lot of diversity. That’s why whenever I find a new site with free-u...

The 2025–2026 @pensite.org season kicks off tonight, and for the first time in a long time, I won’t be running the meeting!

After 7(!) years on the PEN board, my retirement officially goes into effect this week. I’ve had the pleasure of working with so many lovely people over all that time.

Don’t worry, once we’ve helped them come for immigrants and trans people, they’re sure to be appeased and dedicated to solidarity in our great big tent and not come after anyone else, as history teaches
