Really enjoyed this conversation about “Lone Survivor” and “The Green Berets” with @lylerubin.bsky.social and @vanjackson.bsky.social on @bangbang1492.bsky.social. (Reconstructing the *true* events of Operation Red Wings was the work of a couple of years for chapter 4 of THE HARDEST PLACE.)

Wes Morgan is one of my favorite combat journalists out there, so it meant a lot to have him on the pod to dissect the glorious agitprop, Lone Survivor. And also to go deep on its spiritual precursor, The Green Berets.

So grateful to have my dissertation advisor (and good friend) Dan Borus on show to help psychoanalyze Kubrick's great satire. And highly recommend Dan's accompanying essay, too!

Eli Valley is a hero of mine, so having him on the pod to discuss the aesthetic and moral contours of Spielberg's Munich was really something.

Had a blast having Adrian Horton, the arts writer for The Guardian, on the pod to discuss The Report. A film that indicts an entire generation of politicians and their supporters. Across the partisan divide. Link in comments.

Loved having my friend Osita Nwanevu on the pod to talk about the epic of all epics, Lawrence of Arabia. Also, buy his extraordinary (and extraordinarily timely) new book, The Right of the People!

Link to his book in the comments.

Pleasure having the gents from @remembershufffle.bsky.social on the pod to talk about the second greatest submarine flick of all time.

I learned from @lylerubin.bsky.social that “troops eat first” is a morale thing officers use in the military and this is, uh, not it

It's so funny that people copy this, given that DOGE was basically the least effective domestic US policy initiative of all time.

News: Bari Weiss just sent a memo to staffers at CBS News asking them to produce a memo explaining "how you spend your working hours—and ideally, what you've made (or are making) that you're most proud of."

One CBS News staffer puts it like this to me: "We just got Elon Musked."

Contradictions abound in the life and times of Pete Hegseth, writes @lylerubin.bsky.social. His harangue at Quantico focused on fat troops and fat leaders, and he waxed romantic about accountability, merit, and high standards—then he introduced Donald Trump.

He's telling them 'self control and discipline is only for obedience and making muscles bigger. Forget control over one's mind and discipline over one's actions for a good purpose. We don't need to be decent or moral. Just obedient to whomever is in charge and swole.' So inspiring! Worth dying for!
