The entire thing imposes her family's history of making sure they were counted as being white as if it is the experience of every family and only in passing mentions why that even matters.

Were there people who did not think we were white? Sure! Many of them were, in fact, Northern Italians. There were people who thought we were part Black & others who thought Mediterranean was it's own thing. There still are, in fact, people who think we are not white. Go to 4chan, they're there!

So yes: some people definitely changed last names to avoid discrimination.

But the very act of romanizing a name, deleting characters we don't use in English, dropping accents and assets, is standardizing the name to fit into our Anglo-centric world.

Ellis Island did all of those things.
