Tennant is so totally the guy who'd do it.
Actors can be nuts, man. A dude (André Tchaikowsky) left his skull to the Royal Shakespeare Company to play Yorick in future productions. No one felt comfortable doing it until David Tennant played Hamlet.

Last post: I recall David Tennant was in a comedy called Rab C Nesbitt (I watched it growing up and eventually got used to the really thick Scottish accent in it!) and he played a bar maid who was trans. This was unfortunately the 90s and his character was the butt of several jokes.
