was talking to some people about this in-game and it came to my attention that there is a whole generation of xiv players who didn't see the nier rein crossover weapon stories
so i decided to throw them together in an accessible format

The black mage who wove the arts of destruction thinks of
the calamity to come in 2,300 years. Will oral traditions change?
Will books become ash?
So she sends her own memories into the far future.
In short, the black mage made a bet and won. 2,300 years later,
her memories are revived, and she is surprised to learn the
taboo magic she created has been discovered and learned
by certain other mages.
The mage joins her future adherents to fight monsters who
seek to bring about the calamity by summoning the stars.
Their only hope is her magic of destruction—the very
same magic that already took so many lives.
The mages use the arts of destruction to save the world,
unbeknown to many. But before vanishing, the great dark
mage leaves her pride and joy⁠—her staff—to her disciple.
It is an old thing, with the remains of a monster at its head.

has warred with dragons for an age. And among its
people, mighty knights known as dragoons raise
their spears high to protect the people.
As a shepherd boy stands before the corpse of his
younger brother in a ruined home, he makes a vow
to slay the black dragon who took all from him. He
then casts aside his crook and takes up a spear.
The former shepherd boy becomes a dragoon. His
eyes are clouded; he speaks little. While knights
shudder to see him slaying dragons with a smile,
his master and friend know he has a warm heart.
His revenge now complete, the dragoon removes his
helm. But he never drops the spear, for he now knows
the dragon sought vengeance for its sister. And
soon, he will call his weapon by the dragon's name.

As old enemies came up with new magicks and skills to

spread his secrets. Some named this betrayal,
but he remained firm in his beliefs.

against fate and fought the light with his black
greatsword—one known as the Warrior of Darkness.
Warped by light, the sin eaters dragged the world
toward destruction. But as the warrior continued his
journey, the light began to eat away at him, and he
lost the strength to wield his greatsword.
When his last foe fell, light spilled from the warrior,
transforming the hero into one who pushed back the
dark. Yet even so, his sword supported him, and he
found the strength to continue on.
He defeated the ancient mage. He snuffed out the
primordial hero. The Warrior of Darkness persevered
through adversity and returned darkness to the sky,
thus the people named his sword "Shadowbringer."
