You don’t spend that much time building a character from scratch to not develop a parasocial relationship and physically wince when you put them into peril..
There’s one character in every story I write that just has my entire soul. Less of an author-insert and more of an author ensoulment

I switched to this and @bookshop.org for every book, ebook, and audiobook purchase where they have what I want - which is 99% of them -- and the apps are great, and I get to support a local bookstore. It's all win here, folks.

What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

Do what you feel capable of. As long as the reader knows where the characters are on the page, it doesn’t have to be in every single shot.
Or have it all take place in an underground cave with the lights out.

My rule of thumb for comic bgs is to make at least the establishing shot’s bg detailed & clear; the rest of the bgs on that page can be drawn in shorthand, if you’re low on time/resources
YMMV but comickers aren’t paid enough to draw all high-detail bgs, & the bg will prob be covered by text anyway
