A thundering crack echoed through the room, and a blinding white light forced Laurence to recoil. As the light faded, Laurence peeked around his hands.
A beautiful woman, skin the color of the night sky and cloaked in dark cloth from head to toe, towered in the middle of the room. Looking at her, Laurence felt that she could bore tunnels through mountains and set continents aflame with her piercing gaze.
She stood over the body of the old man, now a mushy heap at her feet. The old man’s head had been bashed in, and his brains seeped onto the floor through the sockets where his eyes had once rested. The woman held a sword whose hilt glowed with a pulsing white light, and raised it in challenge to the other men.
“Stay back, you monsters,” her voice, which boomed with authority, “I’ll cut you all to ribbons.”
“How did you get in?” one of the bearded men demanded.
The woman smiled with grim confidence, “The Order of Darkness has always been one step ahead of you demons. And we always will be.”
“Get her!” the oldest of the bearded men said, drawing his revolver. The others quickly followed, taking out their own sabers and pistols.
“Take this,” the woman said to Laurence, and threw him a jewel-encrusted pendant, “And stay close to your family.” As Laurence held the gold and purple object in his palm, he felt a surge of energy pulse through his body.
The woman parried a sword thrust and pushed a gun-toting hand upwards, forcing it to fire into the ceiling. She swung around to deliver a slash across the chest of one of her opponents.
“When you get to Hell, boys, tell them Harriet Tubman sent you,” she said before running one through the stomach.
