I spent the day in DC working with the Victim Advisory Group of the US Sentencing Commission. It’s so rewarding to be a part of a team working for victims across the country, and to be in a room where expertise and experience is valued and respected.

I’m also thankful to be in my own bed tonight. 😴

I have said it often — everyone is against abuse until it implicates someone they know and love.

Then, too often, it’s defend, excuse, minimize, justify.

“Very few people will sacrifice anything they truly value to correct an injustice that doesn’t involve them immediately and directly.”

There is no structure—be it government, church, etc—that can thrive when bad people are in charge.

Conversely, very bad structures can often work if good and godly people are in charge.

Work on structure, to be sure. It is necessary.

But start with character.

@tialevingswriter.bsky.social explains in her book, The Well-Trained Wife, how churches like Hegseth’s (CREC) teach wife-spanking as acceptable discipline.

So this should not be a surprise.
Pete Hegseth’s mom: “I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around and uses women for his own power and ego. You are that man (and have been for years) and as your mother, it pains me and embarrasses me to say that, but it is the sad, sad truth.”
Pete Hegseth’s Mother Accused Her Son of Mistreating Women for Years
Penelope Hegseth made the accusation in an email to her son in 2018, amid his contentious divorce. She said on Friday that she regretted the email and had apologized to him.

Taking it day by day. And He grants me moments of such beauty when I’m feeling the loss deeply. What a savior.
But it is most definitely to say welcome to the mountain. The mountain of grace. You’ll have everything you need. Scoop up armfuls daily. Welcome to a new season with Jesus who knew all along this was coming. You weren’t prepared but he was. You’re going to be OK. I mean it. Walk with him and see.

This is why I advocated for a law in Tennessee to criminalize clergy abuse against adults. It passed unanimously, and it’s now a Class E felony in this state for a clergy member to have sexual contact with someone they’ve counseled.

Praying all states will criminalize such predatory behavior.
The dynamics of adult clergy sexual abuse are complex. Offenders often exploit their position, power, and influence—not physical force—to perpetrate the abuse. This leaves many victims questioning whether it was abuse at all, often carrying lifelong self-blame as a result.

Same, same. But loyalty to (or fear of losing?) denominational identity outweighed truth and justice.

It seems there’s no such thing as a dealbreaker anymore.
I feel so naive.

I really thought that in my own small way I could help bring about change for good with “the good guys” — who weren’t so good after all.

Sobered and humbled and sad.
