The remains of Cairn Holy II - one of two Neolithic chambered cairns which overlook Wigtown Bay in Dumfries & Galloway. The Clyde-type chambered cairn was traditionally thought to be the tomb of Caldus, the mythical Scottish King. 📸 My own. #TombTuesday #Prehistory #CairnHoly

This week's #FunFactFriday comes from #Vatersay
Did you know Vatersay and nearby Eriskay are the only places in Scotland you will find the Bonnie Prince Charlie Flower (Calystegia soldanella), brought over by the young Jacobite from France when he fled after the Battle of Culloden.

🪬🧿 Castle Stalker, Scotland

#scotland #castle #highlands #stalker #landscape #travel #photography #alttext
High-angle shot of Castle Stalker in Scotland, revealing its location on a small tidal island. The castle's stone tower rises from the island, encircled by water reflecting the cloudy sky above. The surrounding landscape includes extensive mudflats exposed by the tide, with meandering streams cutting through them, leading to the open waters of the loch. Distant mountains form a majestic backdrop under a sky filled with dynamic cloud formations, suggesting a remote and rugged natural setting.

Morning All !

Happy #Stunday everyone 🌞 I've taken a dive into my archive for this one...

Coral Beach at Claigan and Loch Dunvegan, Isle of #Skye, #Scotland. May 2017

The beach is not made from coral ! More in Alt Text

#Landscape #Seascape #Photography #EastCoastKin
Beneath a stormy looking sky the sandy beach glows in a patch of sunlight. The sand leads down to the choppy, turquoise and dark green waters of Loch Dunvegan (a sea loch).
The dazzling white ‘sand’ of Claigan Coral Beach, that can be seen in many photos, is in fact not sand. It’s also not coral. It’s formed by the deposit of small pieces of ‘coralline’ hard seaweed called maerl that is crushed by wave action, dried and sun bleached on the shore.

This is an important habitat the Maerl beds are purply-pink when alive. They are a marine nature conservation priority in Scottish waters as they are an important habitat for small marine plants and animals including young scallops.

Estonia has closed the Saatse border crossing with Russia due to an unusually large Russian military presence on the other side. The Estonian Police and Border Guard (PPA) noted increased patrols and military movements that were much higher than normal, which were deemed beyond routine activities.
