Something maybe worth noting is that all the frog costumes and signs and good-natured memeing came about because a wide spectrum of Americans saw someone in direct, brave confrontation with ICE—getting pepperballed and standing their ground—and thought “that’s awesome. That person is a hero”

Only to then grow up to be an adult and realize that the Lost Cause narrative WAS the lie and then try to come to terms with what that meant, what the real truth actually looked like, and how that curriculum affected my viewpoint and so many others. Talk about indoctrination — it’s downright scary.

I grew up in a small Southern town, but I actually didn’t learn the Lost Cause narrative until AP American History in 11th grade. Up until then, it was “Slavery was the reason for the Civil War.” It was so damaging to learn the “real reason” at 16 & try to reconcile “the lies” I learned as a child.

A huge loss for the journalism world. May her memory be a blessing.

Late 70s here too. Lots of Stephanies and lots of Jennifer/Jennys. In one of my junior or senior level major courses in college, we had at least 5 people who were some derivation of Jennifer in a class of about 23 people.
