Throwback climb up the Spire 🖌️✨

Painting these Slay the Spire board-game minis was a blast, but The Defect stole the show, both on the table and at the hobby desk. I experimented with glass-effect orbs for the first time and loved how the blues and highlights turned out.

Making some sewer, lava, and docks bases for the TMNT chibis. Green stuff and Technical Effect paints in progress of drying… hopefully the water goes clear and the lava earth cracks like I expect it to.

Sometimes we’re unsatisfied with a thing we made because when it only existed in our head, we saw all the things it could have been and when it’s done we know all the things that it isn’t, but we can’t see the way it expands into a million new things when someone else unpacks it in their head. 🖊️🦑

When I was 16 Darth Maul was the coolest thing I’d ever seen. ❤️🖤
I even dressed up as him for Halloween, double-bladed lightsaber and all. So my first Shatterpoint mini had to be Maul. 🔥 I painted my first ever lightsaver, tried makeup sponges for the lighting and some glazing effects on the beams.

The chibi sculpt made it extra fun to exaggerate the color contrast and give him some real presence on the table.

Got Apocalypse from Marvel United: X-Men base coated in about 40 minutes. It’s not the most complex sculpt, but I’ve missed painting in this playful style. Feels good to mix in these quick, satisfying sessions alongside my more detailed projects.

So if you’ve got an old DSLR gathering dust in a closet somewhere, consider giving it a second life for your hobby pics. Good lighting and consistent settings do most of the heavy lifting — fancy new gear is nice, but it’s not always necessary. 4/x

I still shoot all my video with my iPhone (because trying to shoot video with this DSLR is pain and suffering), but for stills, I really prefer what I get out of this chunky old Rebel. The depth, the crispness, the way it handles shadows — I find it beats my phone every time 3/x

With my light box setup, I made myself a quick cheat sheet of settings for both white and dark backgrounds — swipe to see it in the second pic. Having those numbers dialed in saves me a ton of trial and error. 2/x

I’ve been using my old-ass Canon Rebel T5i from 2013 to shoot my minis. I can only assume the “i” stands for internet, even though it has zero WiFi, Bluetooth, or any other conveniences. What it does have is a decent sensor and enough manual control to make my tiny plastic heroes look their best 1/x
