I'm new, so thought I should introduce myself (for those who don't know me from the other place). I'm an interdisciplinary scholar, working mainly across linguistics and law. The public made noise for Liam Ramos and it got him released from Dilley.

Now we must make noise for 7 year old Diana Crespo.

Her parents were taking her for emergency medical care when ICE grabbed them, and she’s rotting in the camp sick and exposed to measles.

Get them out!

Dear loved ones,
Help us – my child’s condition is life-threatening and urgently needs treatment outside the Gaza Strip.
Without urgent medical attention, my son may not survive.

6. Rising to the challenge of moral consistency does not mean supporting your man through thick and thin. It means standing with the victims, whoever they might be, against the oppressors, whoever they might be. And, if necessary, making yourself unpopular in doing so.

Dans le métro parisien, à peu près toutes les publicités pour ce truc sont graffitées avec des messages anti-IA et qui mettent en garde contre la surveillance.
C’est ça, l’humanité qu’on aime et les ami·es qu’on veut 🩷

ICE has been holding a disabled double amputee named Rodney Taylor in a camp for a year.

He’s been in the US since he was two years old.

It’s all he knows.

When they detained him, they denied him access to new prosthetic legs.

His health is declining.

Yesterday in Australia two autistic children were murdered by their parents. @australia.theguardian.com felt compelled to report that "The family were described on social media as a lovely couple and a good family." Lovely couples don't murder children.

travel is fraught these days, but it's always been so for scholars who needed to enter fortress europe and the US on visa. imo if a scholarly organisation is an international one, it should try to host conferences outside these locations.

New year, new handle!
I finally got around to adjusting my Bluesky handle to use the domain of the LLIRN's website.
One of the most recent additions to the site is my project page for my ongoing work on language, asylum and credibility 🤗 I love having one place to collate everything!
Language, Asylum and Credibility
Since 2014, Laura Smith-Khan has been exploring the role of language in Australia’s asylum procedures. This began with a small Master’s research project, conducted under the supervision…

Little note in the new Bill on Hate Speech

Good thing there will never be a Minister who acts in bad faith when they go about banning groups.

The banning power says the “Minister is not required to observe any requirements of procedural fairness” before criminalising and banning an organisation (and exposing current and former members to criminal prosecution). These are Trumpian powers, removing the usual checks for good decision-making.
