I’ve been thinking a lot about D’Angelo’s passing, BET After Dark and the commodification of the toxic bodying shaming culture of the 2000s. There was a lot of focus on the women who were impacted by this culture. We often forget how toxic it was for men at that time as well.

Federal agents invaded even the offices of The Crisis and the National Association for the advancement of colored people and asked searching questions: " just what, after all, were our objects and activities?” I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, “We are seeking to have the constitution of the United states thoroughly and completely enforced.” It took some ingenuity, even for Southerners, to make treason out of that.

Autism doesn’t stop at 18. There are plenty of autistic adults that often get left behind during media coverage because the focus is often on moms of autistic children. It’s another way to erase autistic people’s personhood.
