Which proves my point. In Australia, English was mandatory at A level in my day. Like everyone else. I took 5 A level equiv subjects. Future doctors did physics, chem, and maths. Future lawyers did history etc. But we all did English.

Which is why I hate this sort of crap. When I lived in Hungary and Vietnam, no-one cared that I couldn't speak the language. They appreciated my efforts to try the basics even though I was crap at it and they are devilishly hard languages to learn.

Changes to the English language requirement were first reported in May when the government published their early plans in the immigration white paper. The new standard requires people to express themselves “fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expression” and to be able to communicate flexibly in social, academic and work situations.

I spent much of my time in Budapest in the the 6th district (mainly at the ruin bars if I am honest). Because most of the Hungarian Jews were killed in the Holocaust, I found the Hungarian relationship with Jews very confusing.
