Like Ahab, my arrival at ‘no’ resulted from a brutal blow by life. One for him, many for me, ending with a one-two shot that broke my spirit. But this ‘no’ is as much an intellectual event as emotional. Without contemplation, some simply stand back up and plod on unthinking.

On the way home from dinner at my parents’, I wandered through the wild streets of Northumberland. Winter here is dark and dreary, and bands of feral Geordies, who have ventured too far north, roam the streets, dressed in t-shirts and shorts and cajoling each other with shouts of, ‘Howay, man!’
