I don't think an umbilical cord is a good comparison for the relationship between Europe and US big tech. First of all, the value flow looks very different. Second, in-depth surveillance mostly starts after the umbilical cord has been cut.

How can AI be dangerous? I mean, yes, it spews misinformation, yes, it creates addiction through affirmation, yes, it poisons our environment, and so on.
Maybe we should regulate AI and focus on building the tools that help us be more productive.

It's telling that Microsoft is answering the push for Digital Sovereignty by throwing money at data centers. It clearly shows that they didn't understand that Digital Sovereignty is about more than the location of the data center. It's about knowing what happens to your data.

Someone needs to explain to our government that companies like Google and Microsoft have offices worldwide that work on their software. Just because you cannot see changes to the source code doesn't mean no one is changing it.

We really should start asking the critical question. Not if AI can do something, but why we shouldn't let AI do something. Gift giving is about thinking of the other person, not about simply buying random stuff. Thus, outsourcing it to AI means failing.
