In fairness, I was traveling, but I completely missed that there'd been yet another lethal strike on a boat in the Caribbean. We're getting to the point where the military murdering boatloads of civilians is a below-the-fold kind of story. We're in a very dangerous place
Trump says U.S. struck 5th boat accused of carrying drugs off coast of Venezuela, killing 6
President Trump says the U.S. has struck another small boat he accuses of carrying drugs in the waters off Venezuela.

At the request of the U.S. Department of Justice, a Facebook group used by nearly 80,000 people to report sightings of federal immigration agents in the Chicago area has been taken down by the social media giant Meta, Facebook’s parent company.
Facebook suspends popular Chicago ICE-sightings group at Trump administration’s request
The group, "ICE Sighting-Chicagoland," has been increasingly used in the last five weeks of President Donald Trump’s intense deportation campaign to warn neighbors that federal agents are nearby.

Final thought: Frey and his allied groups (Strib) have used a strategy that has boosted Fateh's name recognition. People are clearly looking for more info on him. This is a risky approach because, in part, the Fateh searches have been driven by his opponents. It would be hilarious if it backfired.
kedrickillian.bsky.social
It also appears that just this week, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's endorsement of Fateh caused another spike. The DFL convention and Ilhan spike are larger than similar spikes for Frey related to his endorsement from Governor Walz.

Again, this all may be doom searches, but Fateh is getting attention.
Fateh recorded a Google trend score of 80 to Frey's 37 on the day of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's endorsement of Fateh.
kedrickillian.bsky.social
Some takeaways: Fateh does seem to have name recognition, and people are researching and making informed decisions. In both 2017 and 2021, Frey led by these measures at the end.

Also of note, the DFL convention led to a surge in Fateh searches and has been the most consequential event thus far.

2. This shows searches metrowide, so this would also include those outside of Minneapolis (there is a city breakdown, see below). 3. While this at times has corresponded to votes (it did for Frey in 2017), it's also possible folks research and then don't vote for the subject of the search.
Google Trends is showing Fateh ahead since the campaign began in earnest at the end of September. He also peaked recently with the endorsement of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.
kedrickillian.bsky.social
One of my favorite methods for tracking certain kinds of campaigns (like Mpls mayor) is Google Trends. Caveats. 1. Searches only for Mayor Frey and Senator Fateh are measured, as they have existing offices. Attempts to include other candidates didn't work well, or they're not generating searches.
The Google trends chart shows two lines: the blue one represents Senator Fateh, who peaked in July around the DFL convention. That was the biggest Google event thus far in the race. You see more noise as the DFL issue was debated, and then the campaign picks up in earnest at the end of September as both candidates start to generate Google searches.

Well, looks like you’re right. Education Minnesota still refers to the weekend conference as “MEA.”

Unions brought you the weekend.

Minnesota teachers brought you MEA weekend.

Make it a devil's choice. You want to go the blissful ignorance route? You're negligent and not doing your job. If something is widely known and in the news, and the Speaker of the House is unaware, it makes them look dumb. Bring him a newspaper. If they want to play dumb, then make them look dumb.

I don't understand why U.S. reporters so regularly seem to let politicians get away with 'I haven't seen that' about stuff a) they obviously know and b) is directly relevant to their job. Did they sign some kind of agreement never to ask a follow-up question?

This is the game conservative Democrats have been playing propping up this discreet right wing political operation, now bound for a huge conflict between local
Law enforcement, ICE and the National Guard.

We kissed their butt to appease them and look where it got us.

city police > federales
notalawyer.bsky.social
the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

The hellscape of Minneapolis and Council Member Alondra Cano and community leaders played a huge role in boosting Indigenous People’s Day in 2015. It sparked a national movement.

President Biden officially recognized Indigenous Peoples' Day with a presidential proclamation in 2021.

Protecting the city residents
- which this language says in one place - and protecting ICE, which it says in another, are two completely different things and conflicting. The people need protection from ICE. They need a commitment from the mayor of the city. This language is wishy-washy.
kedrickillian.bsky.social
The city says they do not participate in immigration enforcement, and then later say they will protect immigration enforcers. By extension that means they are supporting immigration enforcement. It’s written in a way that trusts the DOJ and federal government to operate in good faith.
kedrickillian.bsky.social
The City of Minneapolis apparently is using the federal shutdown to update their language around the separation ordinance.

There seems to be some inherent conflicts here. www.minneapolismn.gov/government/p...

MPD is there to “protect you” but what if people need protection from ICE?
Minneapolis website:

Police and firefighters are here to protect you. They do not to enforce federal civil immigration law.
From city of Minneapolis website.

Police role in community safety

The public should be clear that the Minneapolis Police Department does not participate in the enforcement of federal civil immigration laws.

However, police may be called to a scene if there are safety concerns. In cases like this, MPD will step in, find out what's happening, and calm the situation to keep everyone safe.

The council member is totally right. If the downtown council, Mayor Frey and his allies don’t condemn this anti-Minneapolis propaganda, they’re teeing up Republicans to run statewide on this garbage next year. They’re willing to risk a GOP governor or leg to make sure their stooge remains mayor.

The moderates of this city really want to deliver a Republican legislature next year. And corporate democrats are giving them the lay up.

It won’t hurt progressives. But it will hurt the top of the ticket next year.

Also, I would say it’s dubious to say Constituents will guide the process, when shes barely a ward 2 Constituent herself, having just moved into the ward. She’s actually kinda undermining your own argument; in this case an outsider would be making the decisions for the constituents.

The idea that there are activists and citizens who attend protests because it’s what they believe in is completely foreign to them. If it isn’t a personal grift, they don’t understand the motivation.
