The Rudston Monolith, the tallest standing stone in the UK, in the churchyard of All Saints Church in the tiny village of Rudston in East Yorkshire. It is believed to have come from Whitby, which is 35 miles north.

Getting away from home was chaotic – we picked our car up from the mechanic, drove five hours to board our dogs then another two hours the next morning to catch a plane. Flew to D.C., then to Dublin, where we caught yet another plane to Edinburgh. Our stay at Melville Castle has been restorative.

Just went on an organized tree tour of a cemetery yesterday led by the on-staff arborist. There was a movement in the U.S. in the 1820s toward planning cemetery landscapes and tree selection was a major part of that.
My brother posted the top photo on Facebook, which our grandfather took of Virginia Mayo at the 1956 Indianapolis 500. One of his friends saw it and said “hey, the guy with the camera is my grandfather, and here’s the photo he took.” It shows our grandfather center left, wearing a pith helmet.
