They should have been all over that sort of behavior. Letting any attendee get that close to a guest without the guest inviting it themselves is an inexcusable failure of their security protocols (or what their protocols ought to be).

I used to volunteer at a large anime con (7.5k-10k attendees), and we always had to be conscious of attendees not getting out of line with guests at meet-and-greets. Some people think that paying for a badge means you're paying for license to be inappropriate with guests. Twitchcon staff failed.

I say this as someone who has had multiple pastors from the particular sect I was raised in (UCC), and other of the liberal sects, say that I should be a pastor. Alas, I couldn't do it because I don't believe in the divinity of a single human or in miracles, so I would be a shitty pastor. 😀

Also, don't try to correct the Pope when the Pope is simply putting the Sermon on the Mount, the foundational doctrine of the entire faith, into modern parlance.

I am no great fan of the Pope, any Pope, because they are still backwards on some things, but when it comes to the poor and refugees? 👍

It doesn't require being terminally online. I was raised in a home where watching the news every evening was considered an obligation for being an informed member of society. Alas, that's a viewpoint that has eroded greatly over the last half-century. People don't want to follow current events.

Same for the way they go after LGBTQ+ posters, especially the trans posters. It's like cis white centrists don't know, or care to know, the difference between "the left" and "minorities".

I think it's an underrated value in these discussions that a lot of people who see themselves as "enlightened centrists" or "sensible liberals" also really get off on the license to be rude to people who are different that the right grants them.

Downplaying the role of the Russians/Soviets in WWII was an intentional choice, because it downplayed the importance of the "godless Communists" in the fight against the Axis, making the Cold War easier to justify to the Boomers and GenX as they were growing up.
