He bumps his nose against mine, and I know without him saying a word that he’s waiting for my permission. I could cry. Perhaps I do. My whole face is so hot I’m not sure I could tell either way, but I can’t bring myself to speak, so I nod and bring my hand up to rest on his neck, just under his ear where I might brush my thumb along the stubble at his jaw.

Ever since getting this necklace, I have connected with so many other Arabs. As a white-passing Arab, it's hard for me to make connections with people who share my heritage, because I don't "look" Arab. This small thing has opened so many conversations, which leads to understanding, and I love that.
