To propose that GenAI can compensate for "archival silences" perverts Trouillot's work. It's is a contradiction to say that a product whose logic exacerbates power imbalances--creating a most-likely guess based on the existing record--can restore absences that are the product of those imbalances.

Well. That's wonderful. I'm bedridden and somehow 'not eligible for disability benefits'.

I can appeal it, but that'll be months more of starvation rations for my husband and me so the kids can eat. And I can't provide *anything* for Yule for them. Not even a stupid tree.

Sometimes, I really

I am, shockingly, still dyslexic!

My spelling is *wretched* today.

I can tell I'm groggy or tired when I start feeling dyslexic or when I start fucking up spelling 😅. Otherwise I usually don't.

I don't even feel dyslexic most of the time. I honestly don't remember all the tricks my gram used to

Canadians usually mean it to some extent. (Waves from Canada)

I haven't heard a sarcastic 'sorry' here like I did in th US (can't speak to the UK).

Regional pronunciations of 'sorry' might make it seem there's a different tone meant, but a Canadian just goes, oh, you're from up north, eh?
This is actually a fantastic question. It’s always been my interpretation that Canadians tend to actually mean it to varying levels, whereas for Brits, it’s basically a filler word, and you convey your actual meaning via tone. Happy to hear from Canadians tho
Would LOVE to know how parallel British and Canadian "sorries" are/are not. Huge range of meaning, given context of the "apology".

I want to expand on this a little.

I don't know who needs to hear it, but *you* need to believe in your work. If you don’t, why should anyone else?

Lists, best ofs... they're very pleasant to be on, and they're external gratification.

I write for internal gratification alone, these days.
gentle reminder that just because something you made didn't make a "best of" "year end" list doesn't mean you didn't make anything important in 2025

Some rare good news: Journalists at the PEN Guild won their arbitration case against Politico, which deployed two separate faulty AI products (a "report builder" and a headline and summary generator on the homepage) without their knowledge or input.

That violated their contract, the arbiter found.
Journalists win a key battle over AI in the newsroom
PLUS: Artists fight for an AI transparency law in the belly of the beast, a Spotify mass deletion event, and an interview with a top video games journalist about AI and labor.

Esmarch bandages with DIY first-aid instruction diagrams printed on them are amazing and little known! I'll feature one made in Chicago in my Printing on Fabric exhibition at #NewberryLibrary (opens Dec. 2026), but they started as wartime aides in late 19th c. Germany, and were printed 2 at a time!

Share your favourite video game villain in a gif if you can!

Video-game villains are hit and miss so it's hard for me to name a favourite but Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII is the pettiest of bitches.

Look at the alt text. 😂

The most precious commodity you have is your attention. You don’t have to waste it on poor-faith debates or arguments with strangers if you don’t think they’ll be productive. You can prioritize the things that matter to you and make your life richer.

My kids had never had a movie marathon, so we had one yesterday. (They’re generally meh on newer movies, love older ones.)

Horror movies, of course, with those two. 😂 I used to say I categorically hated horror, but surfing through horror selections yesterday, I realized *many* of my fav movies

Canada Jays aren't super common here, but wow are they special. I've heard they're fearless but I've never had a bird perch on my hand like this, for no reason other than curiosity. A pair was following me around and I tried sticking my hand out when one almost landed on my head.

Murguero. This character illustration is inspired by a festive culture from Uruguay. From the pose to the clothes, but with some creative freedom behind it and a little drop of surrealism.

An ache in my soul
For a home
I've never been to
Nor will ever go

Sadness and longing
For places
I've dreamed to see
To walk, and breathe

To feel

And knowing it is not to be
