Today following outreach from @thejusticedept, Facebook removed a large group page that was being used to dox and target @ICEgov agents in Chicago.
The wave of violence against ICE has been driven by online apps and social media campaigns designed to put ICE officers at risk just for doing their jobs. The Department of Justice will continue engaging tech companies to eliminate platforms where radicals can incite imminent violence against federal law enforcement.

I also have a pet theory that our cars being graded as mpg hides how many miles a tank of gas gets you. Every older person I know scared of electrics thinks their Chevy suburban won’t run out of gas before a Hyundai Ioniq needs a charge. They think 250 miles on a full charge is less than 18 mpg.

Have a hope that her inevitably failing at turning CBS around will signal this pivot to chuds is a failure and once she’s ousted CBS and the wider industry will course correct. It won’t and when it fails it will be stripped for parts, but I can dream!

I also think the politicos are severely underestimating the impact this war will have on the psyches of the soldiers and reservists. Vietnam and the GWOT shattered countless lives. Even “successful” wars like the Persian gulf led to… as a society they can’t put off reckoning with this.

Memorable thing from the Yacht rock documentary is this idea that Yacht rock was a period where complex music that combined 70s jazz fusion, pop, and rock became 1 hits. And then MTV came along and if you didn’t have a look for tv you couldn’t make it. Interesting comparison to the TikTok era.

The city and the personalities it breeds aren’t capable of taking on the responsibility of being the globes economic and technological mover. I believe one big difference between NYC and SF is no matter who you are you’re never bigger than NYC. But you can feel and be more influential than SF.

Maybe I’m too small minded but I’ve been flabbergasted by the ineptitude of congressional leaders to take a stand for their own power and influence. But idk, maybe losing an election and getting a half a mil a year gig for Amazon is worse than rolling over for the big strong man in the White House.

Not an AI doomer as I know there are myriad proven use cases for machine learning in specific operational contexts. But if the bubble bursts we won’t have new railroads that we’ll use for over a century — we’ll have Nvidia Blackwell chips that will be obsolete in 3 years.

From personal experience the productivity gains I’ve gotten from AI are:

1. Using ChatGPT to make a summary of a doc I made to put at the top for my Execs because AI summaries are the only thing they want to read now.
2. Consulting with PMs on AI features for the sake of having AI features.

Many staff members here are so identifiable and tied with app decisions it’s incredibly difficult to build that distance. Few IG users know who Joel Kaplan is and there’s infinite layers of blank faces between him and the avg user. T&S at Bsky feels like Aaron. Eng, Paul. Exec, Jay. Etc etc.

My priors is the CEO of a social networking site should never get involved in T&S/Policy/comms. But I also know bsky is so small and people who work there are deeply distressed by the personal abuse they’re getting. Folks at bsky were visibly distraught talking about it at a recent conference.
