Start simple, gather experience and slowly start experimenting.
For your first page layouts you should ask yourself these questions:
Which panel is the most important? Then plan your page around that - biggest - panel.
Always plan double spreads, not single pages. Readability comes first, being

So my first tip for this is just Read a Lot of Comics. have comics in your bookshelf (real or virtual) that you can flip through for inspiration and see how other artists are working and what/how they fit visuals into a panel. I read a lot of manga on my phone, and every time i see a page that--

Do you have any general tips on how to improve comic layouts/paneling? I want to start making proper comics but paneling is something I really struggle with (especially when it comes to making sure my sketch compilations fit the panel size while still being effective/showing everything I want)

one insidious thing about gen AI is it's not just causing us to mistrust dodgy images, it's also making us mistrust images that look perfectly normal. this is gaslighting in a very literal sense bc the technology is undermining the trust we have in our own ability to perceive reality!
