For me it is possibly William Wyler's epic Western THE BIG COUNTRY. Stunningly beautiful, great performances, incredible score, and a lot to say about violence, pacifism and masculinity through a classic Western tale.

I'm a big fan of this approach along with "Oh wow, what an embarrassing thing to say."
apropos james watson’s death i had an idle thought today about how stupid race/iq stuff sounds. “buh if your skin is darker you are biologically less smart” is a thing only a dumbass can believe

Notorious: The Same Hunger
In this pitch-perfect noir romance, Alfred Hitchcock explores what happens when the masks we wear in the world clash with our innermost desires.

I wrote a piece on the work of writer and director James Gunn, who is engaged in a pretty incredible ongoing enterprise that despises bigotry and authoritarianism and reaffirms patriotism for progressives. www.vulture.com/article/jame...
James Gunn’s American Project
He is few critics’ idea of a respectable auteur, but his work is more consistently progressive than any other comic-book material today.

In possibly unsurprising news, Guillermo del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN is stunningly beautiful and soulful and you should see it on the big screen while you have the chance.

I'm glad I ran across @mattzollerseitz.bsky.social 's review of Tron: Ares right after I saw it. He echoes a lot of what I appreciated about the movie: visually and aurally exciting, but also morally and ethically curious. Great sci-fi! See it on a big screen!

This one goes out to all the babysitters of kids in the 80s, like Jon and Deedee who introduced me to Highlander, Terminator, and this little gem here (among many others.) The world needs more of these heroes.
Sometimes it's just an accident, you know? You put two things together and they just...work.
Well, I have realized that when I want a guaranteed 100% effective dose of badassery all I gotta do is watch DEEP RISING and THE HIDDEN back to back in whatever order I want and I am taken care of.

Very proud of the interview I wrapped with Paul Greengrass on THE LOST BUS, & the piece I wrote for TIME. On his documentarian eye/filmmaking aesthetics, approach to true stories, and how he created those fires, worked with the cast/kids & more. time.com/7314530/the-... #TIFF

A bit of news: The Chicago Tribune has deemed the post of film critic non-essential, and therefore zeroed-out that post. My options were to take a newsroom reassignment to be named later, or a buyout to be taken more or less immediately. So...(1/3)

This piece by @matthewschnipper.bsky.social is so great. I recently rewatched THE STRAIGHT STORY with my kids and everyone from 10 to almost 50 found it incredibly moving, I'm sure for different reasons. Don't make the mistake of filing this away as "minor Lynch" (as if there could be such a thing!)
David Lynch’s G-rated Disney movie, ‘The Straight Story,’ follows the Lynchian tradition of raising questions without providing answers. It’s a great exercise for smart teens to start thinking about how they want to live their lives.
