But if you’re replying to this by saying that *your* students are interested in learning, you’re missing the point. We *all* have students interested in learning. This is not a critique of student morality or intelligence. It’s a critique of institutional (ultimately, social) norms and expectations.

As someone with a bunch of degrees, including a PhD, and who is a college professor, people are often baffled when I say that I am not pushing my son to go to college. I mean, he has to do something, but college is not the only option and it shouldn't be pushed as such.
Because, at least in the US, we have done an excellent job of making people believe everyone must go to college & that college is the only way to be successful. I'd wager a good portion of students in universities would be much better learning a trade, and would be happier & better off financially.

Universities are assembling larger and larger teams to deal with academic integrity issues--mostly focused on AI--while simultaneously holding AI "writing" contests, AI-themed events, "hey, come play with these fun tools!" The messages are so mixed, it's criminal. Because AI is bloated with money.

I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

I threw a blueberry pie together on impulse and it’s so good.

I don't know who needs to hear this today, but refrigerate your filled pies for 20 minutes before baking. A dough going into a hot oven give the filling more time to cook before the dough browns, and it will be flakier too. Plus, it's easier to egg wash cold dough without damaging it.

I don't have the same reach as Jasmine, but I find myself raving often about The Chicken Soup Manifesto by Jenn Louis.
If you like chicken soup, it's a must. I've made many, many of the recipes and not a single one has let me down.
FWIW: Mention books you like or you think others might like. You never know what'll happen:

I saw The Sad Bastard Cookbook here so I mentioned it on Masto (in a "in case you need this" sense). It kinda went viral (1K shares). It jumped to a high ranking on Amazon and then they got media attention.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I really don't understand (some) sourdough people's insistence on putting discard (unfed starter) in everything. No, that stuffing does not need discard, and neither do those cookies. Gravy? Also no. Not pie crust either.

I made blueberry bagels.
While they need some tweaking, they are good.

We had the technology to google “what temp is done for turkey” before we had AI.

The idea that we need AI to tell us how to cook a turkey because we don’t want to ask other humans ignores the many millenia of people finding ways to give each other answers without asking someone they know.

It seems like a good time, if a bit late, to share two pumpkin pies I made over 10 years ago now from Amelia Simmons' American Cookery, published in 1796 and considered the first cookbook written and published in what is now the US.

Last night I googled on my phone "Is Clearjel" thermoreversible?"
The Google AI answer: "Yes, Cook-type Clearjel is thermoreversible, meaning it can withstand high temperatures and repeated heating and cooling cycles without breaking down."
This is the exact opposite of what thermoreversible means!
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

I just read that someone uses leftover pork shoulder (pernil) they make in a slow cooker to make ropa vieja, which is traditionally made with beef, and my Cuban soul died a little. Especially about the pernil in a slow cooker. What a travesty. The best thing about pernil is the crackling.

Apropos of nothing, I have also learned that many college students don't know what brackets ( [ ] ) mean, or that they need to be removed in some instances. For example, I provided a template for something that had [Student Name] and many left the brackets in their final draft, so [Juneisy Hawkins].
