#Biology Rising: My version of volvox, the freshwater algae where daughter colonies live inside their mother cells and work together to move towards the light to survive. We are in a volvox moment, now. These are hand printed monotypes on sewing patterns, dipped in beeswax. #sciart #STEAM #art
Body of Water: new sculpture made of paper and foil, inspired by my airplane view over Greenland.
Grandma achievement unlocked.
“Biology Rising: Freshwater Family” the immersive version. @ericbraman.bsky.social and I made made a public art installation based on my original monotypes on circles sculpture, with our poems for the city of Eugene, OR. It was fun to walk through! #installationart #mixedmedia #printmaking #sciart
All one gauge! I’m using tie wire, I find it at the hardware store, it’s used for tying rebar, to reinforce concrete work.
“Origins” - Getting ready for the Artsake gallery show in Newport, Oregon, during March and April. #sciart #trendingart #biology #sculpture #gallery #art
Documenting my #wire vessels before they head off to For Artsake gallery in Newport, OR. I’ve really enjoyed making them and can’t wait to see how they display them. So many shadows yet to be discovered! Most of these are large, 24” in diameter or so #sciart #sculpture #art #traditionalart #shadows
Volvox in black and white, a 1905 drawing by Frank P. Smith:
Sharing a ca. 1905 white-on-black painting of Volvox, by Frank P. Smith (1880 - 1945). Smith produced this and other images of microscopical life for production of lantern slides for his talks on natural history.
Smith later produced the first commercial time-lapse films of flower buds opening, etc.
We found a red-legged frog egg mass and a salamander egg mass in this pond that’s being restored! Plus I got to hang out with scientists. Thanks #umpquawatershed #biology #botany #sciart #science
Thank you, me too! They have waders I can borrow but I have a feeling I’ll be getting my own soon…
Right? They were there all along, and I knew it, but I guess I needed to make this new body of work before I met them, so I could show them, and they could tell me the science behind what I’m actually doing. Haha!
I met the #scientists: lucky me, I found the good people at Umpqua Watershed this week. They loaned me a microscope to view some volvox from the North Umpqua River, invited me to muck about in a pond to count salamanders, and figure out an art installation for Earth Day, too. #biology #sciart #art
Thank you so much, Susan! I’ll share the immersive version next…
Here is a current iteration of my “Biology Rising” installation which explores Volvox, the freshwater algae that forms daughter colonies inside their mother cells and collaborate to survive. This column form glows at night. Made of #monotypes on tissue paper, dipped in beeswax. #sciart #biology
Thank you so much for sharing!
