This one, from 1609, was intended to fund the guest house and the poorhouse (Old Men's House) in Gouda. Just look at how the old man is being transported on a stretcher while another man walks beside him, looking out for his well-being.

This is a lottery print for the guest house and the poor house from 1609. There are three coats of arms at the top and three buildings: the guest house, the poor house, and the church in the middle. There are mostly old people sitting and talking, walking around, or being transported and cared for. https://id.rijksmuseum.nl/200494155

Lotteries were used for various purposes. This lottery print, for example, was used to fund the expansion of the private asylum, the Amsterdam Dolhuis. The prizes to be won in the summer of 1592 are visible here: trophies, bowls, cups, bags of money, and spoons.

Today, I accidently delved into the world of gambling in 16th-century Netherlands. Apparently, King Philip II of Spain believed that if his governor-general, Margaret of Parma, had no means of securing money, she could always draw from the lottery. #earlymodern #skystorians

A page with text in sixteenth century French. The central passage says: "Except that if you see for yourself that it must have caused too many inconveniences to the affairs of my Netherlands by having spent the money, which I hope is not the case, given that, if necessary, you still have the deposit of two hundred thousand écus for the lottery." The original version: "Si ce n'est que vous voyez de vous-même qu'il en doit venir de trop grands inconvénients aux affaires de mes Pays-Bas, par s'être dénoué de l'argent, que j'espère toutefois que non, vu que, au besoin, vous avez là encore le dépôt de deux cent mille écus pour la loterie."

Wie aber werden jetzt Oszillationen vom Atemrhythmus beeinflusst? Ein Mechanismus, der vor allem aus der Tierliteratur hergeleitet ist, ist in dieser schematischen Abbildung dargestellt: Der Atemrhythmus selbst entsteht im Hirnstamm, in einem Kernbereich namens 'präBötzinger-Komplex' (pBC).

Schematische Darstellung eines menschlichen Kopfes mit Atemwegen und Gehirn im Querschnitt. Der Atemrhythmus selbst entsteht im Hirnstamm, von wo Signale an Lunge, Zwerchfell und Atemmuskulatur weitergeleitet werden (in roten Pfeilen abwärts gezeigt). Der Hirnstamm projiziert allerdings auch in höhere Hirnareale wie den Thalamus (in roten Pfeilen aufwärts gezeigt). Gleichzeitig zirkuliert mit jedem Atemzug Luft durch die Nase in den Rachenraum (mit blauen kreisförmigen Pfeilen gezeigt) - hier enden Nervenzellen aus einem Hirnbereich, der insbesondere für den Riechsinn wichtig ist. Diese Nervenzellen werden mechanisch von der zirkulierenden Luft angetrieben - so entsteht ein rhythmisches Signal in diesem frühen Hirnareal, das 1:1 dem Atemrhythmus folgt. Dieser langsame neuronale Rhythmus setzt sich dann fort und wird in schnellere Signale übersetzt, die an nachgeschaltete Hirnareale weitergeleitet werden (mit blauen Pfeilen gezeigt).
