I'm John Fallon, a labor economist on the job market. My JMP uncovers something wild: when chiropractors got licensed in the early 1900s, medical boards responded by making it HARDER to become a doctor.

Why would competition lead to stricter regulations?

Hi #EconSky! I was on the market this past cycle, specifically focused on the DC-Maryland-Virginia area because my fiancé is at the Fed Board (we get married this May).

I had a few government offers, all of which ended up being affected by the current civil service cuts.

I’m an (IO) economist. When I give a movie 7/10, it means it was pretty good but I’d prefer a nonlinear story.
I'm an economist, when I give a movie 7/10 it means the movie is well-excuted but unfortunately not enough for a general-interest journal.
I'm an economist, when I give a movie 7/10 it means if I had a copy I'd sell it for $10 but if I didn't I'd buy it for $7

if you're applying to phd programs you should probably LinkedIn stalk the profiles of recent graduates from said program, *including* those that do not have academic jobs, to get an idea of not only what the program's placement is, but also what people who go a different path end up doing.

My hot take is that this isn’t a trivial intertemporal budget constraint.

It’s an optimal stopping problem: cakes have evolving texture and flavor profiles as they absorb fillings. Also if you’ve spent hours decorating, there’s certainly a flow payoff of “having your cake”
I’m don’t get the saying “have your cake and eat it too.”

The whole value of a cake comes from eating it. What would be the point of just having a cake but not consuming? This is just one good compound thing, not some greedy concatenation of two separate items.

It's encouraging to see high-quality institutions bring down the cost of attendance! Too many students take on debt but don't complete degrees. Going to these schools can lower that risk.

These tuition guarantees are increasingly common. Do they cost-effectively increase low-income enrollment?
A great development. It also reinforces the point that sticker price and cost of attendance can be very different (particularly for those from low-income families).

Nearly half a dozen institutions of higher education announced plans this week to make tuition free for undergraduates whose families make below a certain income threshold, starting in fall 2025.
