It's waking up to landscapes like this that makes everything worth it.

Rebuilding here after leaving Twitter/X — forgive the mass post drop, but I wanted to capture some of my favourite career moments.
Watch this space for ongoing work on emerging contaminants, pharmaceutical fate, exposure modelling. ☘️🌍🧪

I can't think of a better way to start your week than talking about #soils, #sewage sludge and emerging #contaminants - delighted to host Jo and Natasha from @fidrango.bsky.social at @envleeds.bsky.social and looking forward to continuing discussions on this topic 🌱🚜

Still smiling after a busy week at #SETACVienna2025. Lots of interesting discussion - I particularly enjoyed the sessions integrating #policy and #scientific advances which opened some new lines of thinking for me 🤔. Now to go home and digest it all!

SETAC Vienna you were incredible! Lovely catching up with colleagues and friends as well as seeing the advancements in our understanding of risk.
Emerging contaminants of concern in UK honey, a pleasure to finally present this poster!
A pleasure to attend the British Society of Soil Sciences conference and present the Carter Research groups findings on emerging contaminants in UK soils.
It all started here, investigating the impact of historic lead mining on river water quality and exploring remediation using biochar. Controversial and requires further research!

SETAC Vienna, WOW! A privileged to attend and present the validation of a modelling framework to predict the accumulation of pharmaceuticals in crops - wastewater irrigation.

An absolute pleasure to present to the NFU the concerns around organic fertilisers and emerging contaminants. Thanks to the University of Leeds research farm for the chance to broadcast this research!

Collaborating with the Food Environmental Research Agency once again! Many thanks for allowing me the time and space to investigate the translocation of 'Lesser known' human pharmaceuticals into plant.

After a long haul in the laboratory we get to see some targeted and non-targeted data for compounds of emerging concern in UK soils.

A story of how teamwork and method development can yield fantastic data. A combined fate and effects study evaluating how antibiotics present in treated wastewater can influence soil respiration and be a risk to groundwater.

A research visit to the technical University of Denmark to attend the Non-extractable residue seminar. Fantastic trip and fantastic discussions. Nice to see modelling approaches to tackle NER in risk assessment.
Targeted analyses at HUJI followed by non-target work at the University of Leeds. A fantastic collaboration!
An incredible research trip facilitated by the BritishCouncil wohl legacy grant. A collaboration between the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Leeds!

An incredible research trip >300 contaminants and a validated model!

X marks contaminants of emerging concern! Fun times sampling! #manure #biosolids #contaminants #risk
The Carter research group doing our best to sign farmers up for our soil monitoring campaign!

A huge thanks to those who participated! #Emergingcontaminants
Trace levels of veterinary medicines are found to leach into groundwater following manure applications. Concentrations in groundwater are found to persist and FOCUS_PEARL predictions underestimated those of measured!
Utilising advanced manure application techniques reduces the losses of veterinary medicines to receiving compartments (surface water and groundwater). Although raises concerns for soil dwelling organisms and plants!

Serious laboratory method development to devise experimental rigs to assess the effect of anaerobic pig slurry redox potentials on antibiotic degradation.

Another significant effect echoing the need for more manures in environmental risk assessment. Variable DT50 values are an inherent problem!
Busy and memorable times exploring the influence of pig slurry pH on the degradation of antibiotic compounds!

Heterogenic manure properties significantly effect degradation rates and thus risk! More manure testing!!!!
