Starting October 15, six CTA buses will operate with Automated Bus Lane Enforcement systems as part of the City of Chicago’s Smart Streets pilot.

Every time my mom has visited the city via Metra/CTA this year, she’s tried to buy the Regional Connect Pass. She’s been unsuccessful every time because it’s designed SO TERRIBLY. I sent her this graphic today.

As a long-time Regional Connect Pass user, I've created a quick flowchart to help you purchase the new Regional Day Pass. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty simple!

A flow chart to purchase and use the new Regional Day Pass:

STEP 1: Do you have a smartphone:
No: Sorry, Regional Day Pass is only available on the Ventra app.
Yes: continue to Step 2

STEP 2: Do you have a Ventra card?
No: Does your smartphone have a virtual wallet? If no, try again next time after you buy a Ventra card from a Ventra vending machine. If yes, set up a virtual Ventra card in the app and continue to Step 3.
Yes: Make sure your card is linked to your account in the Ventra app and continue to Step 3.

STEP 3: Did you already take a CTA or Pace trip today?

When we look at the rate of shootings per capi-ta across Chicago's 77 neighborhoods, we can see that all the rich neighborhoods are safe, while all the areas with high rates of gun violence are poor. But it is not true that every poor area has lots of shootings. Gun violence is not just a mechanical function of poverty.
The data suggests that what distinguishes similarly poor neighborhoods that have higher versus lower rates of gun violence is not just neighborhood poverty but also neighborhood vibrancy - the degree to which neighborhoods have more people out and about. This is what urban planner Jane Jacobs famously called "eyes upon the street": people available to step in and interrupt the arguments that too often escalate into shootings.

This is good news, in the sense that increased neighborhood vibrancy is much easier to achieve than eradication of poverty. There is a growing body of research from around the country showing that, for example, cleaning up vacant lots or fixing up abandoned houses gets people out of their houses into the community and generates surprisingly large changes in local gun violence, by as much as 30%. Adding street lighting can also help. So can making it easier to zone and build new commercial estab-lishments. None of that is cost-prohibitive. Let the abundance agenda begin in our city's most disadvantaged neighborhoods.

Reminder to never forgive the plumbers union for poisoning generations of Chicagoans with lead because their greed kept the city to mandate lead pipes and union labor.

Also, never forgive the NIMBYs who refuse to streamline newer + safer housing options that aren’t as old as dinosaurs

Thankfully that’s a pretty meaningless action! Because in Chicago we are now told to run our sinks for 5 minutes before drinking water each morning to flush out the lead in our century-old-homes’ pipes

I’m so struck by this video. A regular day in Logan Square in front of a grocery store and ICE pulls up and tear gassed people. Funston Elementary School is right across the street as well. This is a major corridor in Logan Sq. No concern for human safety
