Interesting take on election timing. One noncausal thing from the LA city council: immediately after the switch to even years, incumbent / establishment members lost their seats due to challenges from the left for the first time in recent history. Again, not NYC, so dynamics may be very different.

I taught my first class in 2014 at an R1, and over the next two years it was pulling teeth to get engagement. I would try to make the technical econ content more and more explicitly political in an attempt to get someone ideological to call out the material or claims with very little luck.
