feed spring shoots,
their delicate, tender green
rising up through
last year’s matted gray.

Tendrils of water
braid over the ground,
whispering downhill,
saturating the thirsty soil,
and slow into a pond.

Insects wake,
toads emerge,
tiny minnows shimmer
behind a beaver
swimming morning laps.

Leggy cranes dance,
their warbling calls
fill the spring meadow
where early morning frost
melts by noon.
