The USA, Trumpocene. The Jewish ancestors have a lot to say. The great-grands don't want to 'make Bubbe a podcast'.

The Supreme Court’s majority right wing indicated in oral arguments that they think racism is over on the same day that the vice president defended the “I love Hitler” guy, and that the NYT reported that the current administration plans to accept only white, English-speaking refugees.
No need to import racists - we've produced plenty of them here in the US. If what you want are US Nazis, check out a Young Republican chat and Buy American.
The Trump admin wants to make the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program — which has saved people from wars and persecution for generations — into a program to bring more Europeans into the United States who "oppos[e] mass migration."
The proposed changes would put new emphasis on whether applicants would be able to assimilate into the United States, directing them to take classes on “American history and values” and “respect for cultural norms.”

The proposals also advise Mr. Trump to prioritize Europeans who have been “targeted for peaceful expression of views online such as opposition to mass migration or support for ‘populist’ political parties.”

That appeared to be a reference to the European far-right political party Alternative for Germany, whose leaders have trivialized the Holocaust, revived Nazi slogans and denigrated foreigners. Vice President JD Vance has criticized Germany for trying to suppress the views of the group, which is known as the AfD.

A senior official said the Trump administration was monitoring the situation in Europe to determine whether anyone would be eligible for refugee status. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan had not been finalized.

This very very very bad. I cannot stress this enough. I said that they crossed the Rubicon with arresting Ras Baraka several months ago. This is very bad and portends more bad things for regular people.
The President of the United States is calling for the mayor of Chicago and governor of Illinois to be jailed.

The President of the United States is living in an alternate reality and it's long past time for media outlets to start talking about it.

We're beyond "Trump said without evidence." Trump is governing a world that only exists in his warped mind.

Dems should have adopted Pritzker’s current orientation towards Trump from day one.
If you come for my people, you come through me.
If the damage being done to US universities & immigration isn't stopped*, result will be zero Nobels going to people who are US educated/based. For decades.
2035 - 2055, the last USian will win a Nobel. (Nobel prizes are awarded for work done decades earlier.)

*& then vigorously undone
My immigrant grandma has her "surprised NO" face on.
About 1 in 3 US Nobel prize winners are immigrants.
About 1 in 4 were government employees at some point.
About 44% of all Nobel prize winners were educated in US higher education.
As Trump demands a Nobel prize, he is destroying the means by which America came to dominate the prizes.

Sources below
Two things of note in today's announcement of the 2025 Nobel physics prize (besides the work being honored).

1: The US institutional dominance of the prize continues.
2: 2 of the three laureates are immigrants, drawn here decades ago by the then-unmatched opportunities for science here...

Under the Canopy of a Shaken World.
This Sukkot, the world feels fragile. Hope feels harder to hold. But Sukkot has always been a festival of fragility. We sit in open huts, under a sky we cannot control, to remember: our security has never come from walls, but from one another.
PSA: Yep, the news has been extra awful {this day | this week}

AND

you should {up your medication | go to the support group | see the therapist sooner | call your sponsor}

Both things are true.

One thing that comes through awfully clearly in these ICE videos is how many of these goons gravitated toward the job because being able to assault people with impunity is a big thrill for them.

Trump just called us "the enemy within"

Those are LITERALLY the words Adolf Hitler used to describe Jews in Nazi Germany. Literally the same words.
Klein: it's uncomfortable living under Trump, it's uncomfortable having people criticize me, it's uncomfortable facing the consequences of coddling up to racist rightwingers, it's uncomfortable wondering if there's no guaranteed happy ending, why oh why must I be so uncomfortable?
My ancestral Jewish warning system, like that of many other Jews in the US, has been screaming for months bc y'know history happens, evil people exist. I have no idea what Klein's problem is.
Dunno if its as dramatic as swerving, but you can see this on an individual or family level in other arenas. Arlie Hochschild's Second Shift describes how people will do enormous emotional work to maintain "family myths", ignoring reality hard bc the myth is key to their concept of themselves.
The Emperor is shivering <SWERVE>
to avoid thinking that the Emperor is cold because he has no clothes on.
Klein says he will define "we" -- and then goes on to say, without ever defining we

"But I think of the huge backlash to Bernie Sanders for going on Joe Rogan’s show because Rogan was transphobic. Such a big backlash that when I defended him — I became a Twitter trending topic."
Which is the childish part: sometimes good people lose. Part of adulthood is accepting that.
Coates does this, IMO.

'Coates: "But if you ask me what the truth of his life was... it is the usage of hate and the harnessing of hate toward political ends.

Klein: Then let me flip that question a bit. Why are we losing?'

SWERVE.
The amorality of Klein's position here marches along with a childish refusal to accept an unhappy ending. He repeatedly asks "why did Kirk win? Why did we lose?"
Coates tells him. (Spoiler: history happens. Evil people exist.) Klein doesn't want to hear the truth. Swerve.
The wild thing is that he both thinks ideas have consequences - and also that they don't.
Consequences: he thinks its his job to "do politics" and provide "the solution" for Dems to win.
No consequences: making nice with people who wanna hurt TNC.
Makes for more swerving.
Swerving! Yes, EXACTLY. He's swerving bc he really, really doesn't wanna face hard truths. He doesn't wanna do the work, he doesn't wanna be uncomfortable or make other people uncomfortable. He wants a guaranteed happy ending. He wants to play around with words and ideas and keep everyone happy.
The Klein - TNC discussion has Klein asking "how did we lose?" ; searched it for "voter suppression", "Voting Rights Act", "Citizens United" : nada.

ContolF for "Supreme Court": didn't find "Supreme Court corruption" or "Supreme Court rules Trump eligible for ballot."
