Jim Parkinson died today. He was a prolific and astoundingly gifted lettering artist, type designer, and painter. I feel lucky to say he was also my friend.

One of the saddest realities of an AI-driven future is that writers won’t be commissioned to write articles like The Upside Down Pineapple As A Symbol For Swinging Culture In Colonial America (Jan 2023) for wholesalenutsanddriedfruit dot com.

I’ll never be a real grownup because part of me believes wholeheartedly that I can fix anything in my life by buying a new pen and notebook or adopting another cat

Yesterday I had what I think might be my top career highlight thus far: granting the wish of kerning as The Fairy Fontmother as a part of a musical theater number in a costume I helped design in front of a massive crowd.

Today is my birthday (41!) and I have a birthday present request:

Today I want you to:

- visit a local shop and have a short and pleasant interaction with the person working there (purchase not required but encouraged)

- spend 30-60 minutes making or drawing something with analog tools

Adding “, motherfuckers!!” to the end of any basic throw-pillow quote makes it amazing.

“The eyes are the gateway to the soul, motherfuckers!!”

“Live, laugh, love, motherfuckers!!”

“The heart wants what the heart wants, motherfuckers!!”

This article is one of the best, most poignant, most real, most somewhat optimistic but realist things I’ve read in a while.

I think I have to take a Ritalin break for a week every quarter so I can spend 72 hours obsessively posting to the internet about nonsense.

Which has been my primary vehicle of biz dev since 2007.

I love that nobody* drinks now. How great is it to just have a little creative beverage that isn’t going to eff up your sleep or make you feel mildly depressed a few hours later

One day I will make a one pager website documenting the passing of time via the billboards in San Francisco.

I think I moved to SF right before “The Cloud” era.

We’ve just tipped over from “Generalist AI” to “AI Agents”

I wonder if my music taste is going to change or expand since I’ve started ADHD meds… For my whole life I’ve found some types of music to be sonically overwhelming (stuff with a lot of layered instruments) but maybe that won’t be the case anymore?

Farewell my sweet Olive 💔

So happy we found each other 16 years ago. You converted many a non-cat-person with your dog-like ways. You’ve been there through every big life change. So glad you got to spend your last years snuggling in our cozy home surrounded by love. You’ll always be baby #1.

It’s nearing the end of the line for my first “baby” and even though she’s had a long and wonderful life this is really really difficult.
