I've seen some assess the US NSS as a return to its pre-1941 isolationism. I don't see it that way, as it explicitly calls for deep engagement in European politics. If Washington follows the document's strategy, it will be more involved in Europe, not less.

Canada, up until the post-war shift to the US sphere, was a vital component of European security, and there are European graveyards that prove it. We should be in on this, not just as supporters but participants.
On defence the emerging Green position is the need to develop a post-American European military alliance, which is a more realistic appreciation of current political trends in the US than a lot of Labour and Conservative thinking

This says *everything* about the German defence debate, really.
For YEARS experts have fretted over public opinion on defence spending and how it would be impossible to justify spending over 1 or 2%. Turns out 35% (!!!!) of Germans think we’re already spending OVER 5 % of GDP. WTH.
