I'm looking for #Ruby or #Elixir work, can start immediately. Freelancer, getter-of-things-done, many years of experience, feel free to DM for more info. Can work worldwide.

Happy to work with other languages/frameworks and devops as needed.

I had wanted to have this conversation with John for quite a while, and it didn't disappoint! We got into so many great topics: architecture, UX, early Rails, speaking, consulting gigs, coaching, farming, remote work, Rails Guides project. Just not enough time on permaculture. ☺️
Episode 72 just sprouted! 🌱 John Athayde (@johnathayde.com) joins us to chat about how a student of architecture ends up in software, guiding design in software development, consulting in user experience, and his work on the Rails Guides refresh project.

If I offered a fixed-price consulting service in collaboration with a friend, and we wanted to send out a single invoice to a company, is there a simple way that we could have funds paid directly to each of us, rather than one of us subcontracting for the other?

After several days of PaperCall's submission form being broken with no response from their support, we've migrated our talk submission process back to good ole Google Forms. Sorry for the trouble! Please resume sending your amazing talks! 🙏

Developer anxiety is actually a quality control mechanism. It makes us check edge cases and side effects.

LLMs aren't dangerous because they're wrong, but because they're fearless. They write terrifying code with zero hesitation.

Beware of what you approve. You are the only guardrail left.

This is a great post on principles and strategies for handling derived data in Rails apps, with pros/cons and a concluding decision matrix. Love this kind of technical content! 🤌

Is anyone having trouble submitting talk proposals through PaperCall right now? I just got a report about that for @blueridgeruby.com today. We had two successful submissions yesterday, so it seems like possibly a new issue. 😖

Heads-up: if you build and test Active Record queries in the console (which I do a ton), you may be surprised that query caching is now enabled by default in Rails edge.
github.com/rails/rails/...
Rails edge is enabling query_cache by default for console sessions. I wonder if it is intentional or a side effect · Issue #56473 · rails/rails
As a consequence of Wrap console command with an executor by default, console sessions are using query_cache enabled by default. I know it can be disabled passing --skip_executer to console, or set...

Crossed the 50-hour mark working on @blueridgeruby.com this week. I've targeted 10 hours a week working on the conference until the last week, where I'll probably take off completely and work full time finalizing everything.

I just booked Aloft, which is on a cool street a block and a half from the venue, and decently priced.
We've just updated the website with our hotel recommendations. There are lots of hotel and AirBnB options near the venue and while there's no official conference hotel, we wanted to highlight some good options. blueridgeruby.com#stay

Happy New Year from RBQ Conf.

There are 6 days left to submit a talk if you’d like to speak with us this March.

Rare tickets are still available for a little longer.

We’re excited for the year ahead and can’t wait to gather in Austin.

The hidden cost of fixtures is the time spent trying to understand the ones you didn't create (or don't remember).

Dropping into a test with extensive fixtures is like trying to make sense out of a scene from Harry Potter book 5, without the worldbuilding of the previous 4.

Man, if I wasn't planning @blueridgeruby.com, I'd be submitting a "hot takes" talk to @balkanruby.bsky.social. I've already got the outline for a spicy (for me) talk on Hotwire ready to go. 🌶️

I can't tell you how encouraging it is to see the first two week's of initial ticket sales, talk proposals, and sponsorship inquiries for Blue Ridge. And during the holidays, when everyone is busy! So pumped for spring in Asheville. ☺️
