Depolarization might not mean erasing divides, but “repolarizing” around shared values like democracy, fairness, or anti-corruption.

State security overreaching can backfire. When protestors are injured or killed, it can spur parents and middle classes to turn out. Demands can expand to the point of removing the president.
Alternative scenarios are that repression leads to fear keeping people home, in the most repressive states.

Now add 500 Marines called to LA. This is common escalation of protests worldwide. They may start with a specific grievance like transport price hikes (or immigrant raid here), but if security overreaches, more people come out. Large, peaceful during day; small groups more violent at night. 1/2

The world today provides important lessons for how to identify and resist autocrats.

In their piece for @goodauth.bsky.social, @jennifermccoy.bsky.social @beattyriedl.bsky.social Kenneth Roberts & @muratsomer-eng.bsky.social highlight six key lessons on how to counter threats to democracy👇

We identify actions for citizens; pro-democracy orgs and intellectuals; industry sectors under attack like media, academia and law firms; and political parties.

>Early Action is crucial
>Defending democracy requires a collective effort with divisions of labor
>Democracy defenders face uncertainty that may paralyze and divide them
>Mass protests expressing public discontent can be effective but not sufficient to sustain democratic recovery (2/3)
What can the U.S. learn from other countries living through threats to democracy? Lessons from our global research and 15 case studies distilled in my new commentary with @beattyriedl.bsky.social Ken Roberts, and @muratsomer-eng.bsky.social include: (1/3)

Autocrats emboldened everywhere. Today it is Turkey.
The gravest mistake for the publics of democracies is to think that what is happening in Turkey is about Turkey & its region alone. The deepening global fault line between democracy & autocracy and the battle between democratic & oligarchic/far-right rule is played out in TR but will not stop here.

this is what has surprised me. Why are DC cops collaborating with the administration? Don't they answer to the mayor?

A civilian coup is in full progress in Turkey. Unless EU acts swiftly and decisively, they will not only be complicit but will also endanger Europe's own long-term security. An autocratic Turkey with transactional relations with EU cannot reliably contribute to European security +
