What happens in summer, when cooling, not heating, is needed?

Heat pumps are 3-4x more efficient heating per unit energy and much lower maintenance costs / equipment turnover.

But they don’t make a profit, so we get this.

Overlooked corollary: policy that enables car-free living is the most impactful thing a state or local lawmaker can do in terms of reducing emissions and household bills.

🚲🥗🚗 Small choices matter, but big change happens when systems support them.

WRI Climate ranked 19 climate-friendly behaviors to show which ones cut the most emissions and why policies & businesses must make them accessible.

The Dem establishment is going to back Mills over the absolute phenom outsider Platner in Maine, which tells you everything you need to know about how well they understand the current moment & how prepared they are to meet it.

Chicago brings a Monstrance. Protests at the Broadview detention center began 19 years ago. Demoralized by our mistreatment of migrants, a Catholic immigration lawyer I know started praying there on Fridays. A month later he was joined by some Sisters of Mercy. They’ve been holding it down since.

part of the conditions for reopening the govt should be clawing back these slush funds
donmoyn.bsky.social
Even as FBI is being downsized, it must allocate more of its resources to the only part of the govt that is growing: immigration enforcement.
The scale of this growth is hard to comprehend. DHS has a slushfund of $10B - bigger than the old ICE budget - to pay other agencies and state & local cops.
graph shows ICE budget tripling in size

You know, I can think of one Chicagoan that could return to his hometown right about now and do the best thing…

MAGA weirdos can't block installation of these batteries at the county zoning board meeting 🤷🏻
robertferry.bsky.social
I wish Base Power a lot of luck!

They act as your utility (TX so far), install a 24 - 48 kWh home battery for you that keeps you running during a grid outage, and guarantee $0.08/kWh for the next 3 years on your electric bill.

Meanwhile they are managing all the batteries to provide grid services.

Hmmmm. This is all helpful. Meeting installer tomorrow; depending on the conversation, I might come back to you and book an hour of your time.
jeffsseidman.bsky.social
Installer told me that if I clean my ERV filter, etc. regularly, it can last. Hoping that's true. He couldn't explain difference in tech between MUHA units and Infinity, but said that MUHA turns down to 25%.
jeffsseidman.bsky.social
Poughkeepsie, NY. I do need good dehumidification (tight house), and I'm going to get an ERV. I was considering your system of fresh-air intake + reheat dehumid, but decided against because (1) our installer isn't familiar, (2) like your cousin Ryan, I keep windows open when weather allows.

Why not go all Medea, with the new Medea thermostat, leave Carrier out of the picture?

@zoesamuel.bsky.social @ethai.bsky.social @shreyassudhakar.com have come or are coming to speak to my class via Zoom. Met @lissaharris.bsky.social and @johnsmillie42.bsky.social in person. And so many papers read, questions answered by all kinds of folks on here.

I only ever lurked on Twitter, but have had many real-life meets with folks I've met on Bsky. Met @alexbarron.bsky.social here, and he came to @vassar.bsky.social to speak about campus decarbonization. @robertferry.bsky.social wrote a page on architecture for my climate solutions website.

basically most of the good things that happened for me professionally was because of social: learning from folks, communicating our work, having fun. There was an AGU conference in 2019 where we did this IRL meetup in a bar and gd it felt like Cheers as corny as that sounds. bsky.app/profile/cost...

I built my entire career on twitter, starting in 2008. Was part of an energytwitter community, studied dril's sacred texts, felt I made it when I had an official White House account. I pretty much stopped using twitter last year. But I posted this over there, & got 9 likes. Bsky is just better.

A sleeper political issue of the next few years is the rising costs of electricity. AI & data centers are driving up demand & the Trump Administration is making it harder to add clean energy supply. I joined @chrislhayes.bsky.social on #WITHpod to talk about it: open.spotify.com/episode/32ps...

- I met hundreds (thousands?) of interesting folks working in my field and/or expert in other stuff
- I’ve learned a lot from you all
- I once had a tweet end up in the UK National Food Strategy (2021)
- It was good to be so connected when we were all physically isolated in 2020
- You make me laugh

jeffsseidman.bsky.social
Assuming we could get the communicating Medea version, any insight at all in the difference in the underlying tech between this the Infinity?
jeffsseidman.bsky.social
Huh! This is all interesting! Installer was pairing it with Ecobee thermostat, and from the Carrier website, it appeared not to be communicating. But: I could just ask him to get it branded as Medea, with Medea thermostat, assuming he has access to that through a distributor.
jeffsseidman.bsky.social
Hey #heatpump nerds: I've been looking at a Carrier Infinity 27VNA324A003 + CVAMA2417XMA + ERV. My installer is trying to sell me on a (less expensive) 37MUHAQ24AA3 (minisplit compressor) + 45MUAAQ24XX3 + ERV. I'd like to understand the difference in the tech better than he's been able to explain.

Today on Volts: hey listen up! The most important election of the year is happening in Georgia next month. Two seats on the (currently all-GOP) Public Service Commission are up & rising electricity prices are on everyone's mind. This is a bellwether for next year's governor & midterm elections!
