What's crazy about this is that money problems at the New School aren't new. Money was tight when I was there in the 90s, and guess what, it's still tight. Total failure of the people in charge--admin after admin.

So it's happening again at my old school-threatening to shut it down. In lieu of any national higher ed policy or any move by the large foundations (Yo Carnegie) perhaps, crazy ideas unions should invest in the Grad Faculty and turn it into a national labor University?
I'm going to keep banging on about this, so if that's bothersome, mute it; no harm, no foul.

Of course most of us teach at and go to colleges where people teach a lot in smallish classes--community colleges and regional publics. George Will sucked in the 1980s when I first read him in the Post growing up and it seems his suckage has grown. So glad canceled my subscription.
It's so sad that the NYT thinks it has to run this to educate it's readers that all colleges aren't Penn, Oberlin and UVA. The comments make me think that interventions won't stick with the typical Times reader

Great idea. In my specific context, I think that many regional publics in non red states like mine should start to transform themselves into New New College of Florida like schools-- flexible curriculum, democratic education, community focus, Let 1000 New Colleges Bloom!!
Blue states should make democracy the prevailing theme of the upcoming school year. Not just civics/social studies classes, but democracy-reinforcing lessons & experiences integrated throughout the curriculum.
Boldly educate through the crisis, don't leave children in despair, teach a better way.
