Tigers catcher Dillon Dingler is a Gold Glove finalist alongside Toronto’s Alejandro Kirk and Boston’s Carlos Narváez.

Tigers haven’t had a Gold Glove winner at catcher since Pudge Rodríguez in 2007.

Winner will be announced Nov. 2 on ESPN.

“In some ways, it felt like this season was multiple seasons in one, multiple very different seasons in one,” Scott Harris said. “And we’ve got to take a hard look at all of it. We got to take all the good and we got to take all the bad. We got to learn from all of it.”

Scott Harris: “I expect the players that posted dominant years in Double-A to be in Detroit at some point next year. Does that affect what we do this winter? Absolutely. How could it not?”

He pretty much says top prospect Kevin McGonigle and others will be in big-league camp next spring.

No news on Tigers coaching staff yet. They’re still working thru exit interviews.

Innings concerns played into Tigers’ decision to move Troy Melton from rotation to bullpen at trade deadline, Scott Harris said. They didn’t believe they’d get the most out of him by keeping him in rotation. He’ll be a starter moving forward, A.J. Hinch said.

Scott Harris: “We started to get more pitchable later in the year.”

Tigers got a little pull-happy in September, he added. They’ll work with hitters this offseason on approach development and bat paths.

Some improvement, Harris added, will come from hitters who come up thru farm system.

Tigers extended manager A.J. Hinch’s contract earlier this year, Scott Harris confirmed. Terms not disclosed.

Scott Harris declines comment on Tarik Skubal’s situation, including any trade potential.

Harris: “Tarik is a Tiger. I hope he wins his second consecutive Cy Young. He’s an incredible pitcher.”

Some potential deals, Scott Harris said, would’ve brought in pending free agents who didn’t perform down the stretch for players who made their postseason roster.

Scott Harris said he never gets thru a trade deadline without wondering what more he could have done. However, he said, “I think I’m even more confident now than I was then that the deals that I didn’t pull the trigger on would have frustrated us more.”

Scott Harris: “We have to improve the environment for breaking in young players.”

Scott Harris: “We need to improve our health and consistency on the mound.”

Injuries in farm system, he said, left him struggling to produce the second wave of pitching that they needed down the stretch.

Scott Harris: “I can’t be naIve to the fact we need to get better in a lot of different areas.”

“We need to make more contact as an organization. We need to move the ball forward more.”

Because the Mariners never used a lefty to face him. The only lefty to pitch was Gabe Speier, and he faced just three batters (Carpenter, Gleyber and Greene).

Brought out my old scorebook for stretch run and playoffs, never thinking I’d need to use the 13th and 14th innings. Used the whole grid and then some last night. What an insane game.

The Tigers rode Tarik Skubal and Pitching Chaos last October to get within a game of their first ALCS berth since 2013. On Friday, they did both in the same game. Somehow, they nearly pulled it off.

“The back half of that game is like a game in itself,” A.J. Hinch said.

“It’s tough. I think it’s meant to sting. It’s meant to hurt,” Tarik Skubal said. “It’ll hurt for a little bit, and then you have to re-channel that into motivation, to make yourself never want to feel that feeling again.”

This is the longest postseason game in Tigers history. Technically, the Tigers' 13th-inning loss in the 2009 AL Central tiebreaker at Minnesota was a regular-season game, but that's now in the rearview mirror too.
