I am going to assume that the vast majority of people following me on this app likely already know my work but on the off chance that you don’t: I write about the Balkans and international relations, democratization and authoritarianism. I try to stay in my lane beyond that. Cheers!

I am profoundly saddened by the horrific scenes out of Sydney. Antisemitism is a barbarian creed, an affront to every person of conscience. Any act of terrorism or bigotry which targets a community for their faith or identity is an attack on all free people, and the rule of law.

Plenkovic & his puppet Covic moved heaven & earth this yr to ensure Kremlin-backed secessionist Dodik remained in BiH govt & free of EU sanctions. Now, they’re launching their own secessionist-lite project, aka a “third entity”. More on BiH's Hayat TV. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri3W...

American frustrations with Europe's lackadaisical commitments to its own security long precede the current US administration. But key European capitals have for too long played deaf and blind to shifting geopolitical realities. My latest for Odgovor.ba. odgovor.ba/article/6559
Europe’s Problem is not America, its Europe
The publication of the US National Security Strategy (NSS) last week sent shockwaves throughout Europe. The alarm is not unwarranted per se. From the perspective of the continent’s transatlanticists, ...

Incredible scenes today in Banja Luka, with the most senior levels of both the Plenkovic govt of Croatia and its HDZ BiH proxies trumpeting their support for the Kremlin-backed Bosnian Serb secessionist regime in the RS entity. Not even Orban or Vucic have so boldly feted Dodik.

Croatia’s PM Plenkovic in BiH again to meet Russian-backed Bosnian Serb secessionist Dodik, officially to open a border crossing that is not actually open. Along w/ Orban, Plenkovic remains key opponent of EU sanctions vs. Dodik, his pro-Kremlin regime. www.vijesti.ba/clanak/73058...

Europe must urgently cease urging itself to urgently do X, and actually do it — anything.

European leaders and wonks alike have been declaring and announcing, then doing next to nothing for more than a decade. Europe’s culture of passivity will be its undoing.
Europe must urgently build an independent “EuroStack”of critical technologies — or risk foreign powers weaponising its digital dependencies, argues @giorgosverdi.bsky.social in a new report out today. A 🧵

The National Defense Authorization Act, which Congress is expected to pass in the coming days, feat some robust measures re: the W. Balkans, incl mandating POTUS w/in 90 days of its passage to impose sanctions on any person identified as undermining the Dayton Agreement.

If "Western civilization" has any salience as a contemporary political principle then it is an ideological commitment to rational inquiry, constitutional government, representative democracy, rule of law, civil liberties, separation of church and state, and free markets. Not Granichary brigandry.

Europeans are aghast at the US National Security Strategy yet it only reflects the views POTUS has been articulating for more than a decade. What have they done to respond in the interim? Hope is not a strategy, as 20+ years of European waffling in the Balkans has shown.

Ukraine doesn't need peace per se, nor does America, nor Europe. For their long-term strategic interest and security, which are far more important than the agenda of this or that government, all three, in fact, need victory; Ukraine's victory over Russia. That must be the aim of any coherent policy.

Remember there are serious people in Brussels and Washington who think Vucic is actually just pretending to be aligned with Russia: "[Serbia's] government [will] allow payments and transactions for the U.S.-sanctioned Russian-owned oil company NIS...despite the risk of secondary sanctions."

The charges against Mogherini et al by the EPPO remind us that corruption is not unique to Europe’s east (e.g. Ukraine). As in the W. Balkans, “domestic” corruption has often been aided by generations of Western officials who have happily gone halfsies with local kleptocrats.

A week has gone by since the special elections in BiH’s RS entity. With a difference of just 2.21% between the candidates, the evidence of significant electoral fraud by the SNSD regime is overwhelming, ably laid out by Transparency Int. and others. Yet still no reaction from the EU, nor US.

There’s really nothing significant about MJ Calic’s recent essay on Sarajevo. She is a reheated historical revisionist, whose intellectual labor now consists exclusively of a compendium of tortured Islamophobic tropes for Germany’s tankie bourgeoisie. A budget Peter Handke.

Analyses by the BiH branch of @anticorruption.bsky.social suggest the results in 40 voting sites in BiH’s recent special election indicate improbably rapid voting, a clear indicator of fraud (by Dodik’s candidate Karan). They say the results at these sites affect some 8,500 votes.
