The First Indulgence: Week 3 Recap
Psychological Horror has Lost its Mind
bradleyramsey.substack.com
This is beautiful. I often say that I feel similarly when I'm writing stories.

It's like I'm recalling a memory, and I'm just furiously writing the details as they come back to me.
Writing this book feels like tracing a memory I don’t remember having.

Every chapter shifts, same faces, different truths.

It’s teaching me that guilt has its own kind of afterlife.

#amwriting #wip #writercommunity #writesky
An amazing piece. I love how it illustrates the subjective nature of our own reality and lived experiences.

To us, another person can be an entire universe.

And their loss can be just as apocalyptic.
This week's episode of the Saved as Draft Podcast is out now!

My guest for this week's interview is Morana, a writer of dark and erotic poetry. We talk about her top inspirations, like

Today’s prompt for The First Indulgence has led to some of the most real and vulnerable poetry I’ve read on here. Seeing such authentic and beautiful art inspired me.

We’re all fighting our own battles.

This one is mine.

New revelations come to light as old wounds are ripped open.

Hi Eryn! Thank you so much for the wonderful questions this week. I absolutely love participating in the weekly horror writer chats. 😁
Great work here from @thewyrm.bsky.social!

This story was submitted for the Day 1 prompt of my October horror writing challenge! I’m posting new prompts every day throughout the month! 😁
I just launched a new month-long horror writing challenge over on Substack! It stars a brand new character named Lord Devereaux the Devourer. He's an ancient entity that feeds on stories.

Here's the details: bradleyramsey.substack.com/p/coming-soo...

Oooh, I love both sides of that line. The first half is soothing, but then the second half turns it on its head. Excellent writing!
One of my favorite lines I've ever done is in my cosmic horror WIP and it reads:

"Trauma is like a red wine stain on a white carpet. They tell you that, with enough time and energy, you can get it out, but we all know that's bullshit."
One thing that is synonymous with age is loss of memory or dementia. For me, as a writer, the idea that my mind would begin to fade or betray me is the scariest prospect of all.

So, in my work, I'll often experiment with threats that steal or devour your memories.

#HorrorWritersChat #WriteSky
#HorrorWritersChat

Ageing comes to us all, if we're lucky. And while we might not self-insert, our fears colour our horror.
Does it matter if our characters are young or old? Do our ages, and our feelings about ageing, slip quietly out of their mouths?
Do we speak our fears?
10 minutes to outro
Trauma is a huge theme in my work, especially in my horror stories. Older characters are often affected by scars you can't see, but they manifest in how they carry themselves, the way they talk, who they trust, etc.

#HorrorWritersChat #WritingCommunity #WriteSky
#HorrorWritersChat

Puberty or kids brings one element to a story. Hero's journey, finding themselves, etc. An older character might have that too. Or it might be entirely different. What say you?
My older characters often fill the role of the wise sage, where they attempt to deliver wisdom to the younger ones to help them avoid a similar fate.

For example, in my WIP an elderly man tries to warn one of my MCs about the drug he's addicted to, and what it did to him.

#HorrorWritersChat
Gather close, #HorrorWritersChat bods, whether you creak, or not. And believe me, many of us creaked in our teens, it's all good.
Age is just one factor.
But it's an interesting one that we do overlook. How many of us actually have older characters in our books, that aren't the wise mentor type?
Crazy late to the part here this week, but hello! Bradley Ramsey, writer of cosmic and Lovecraftian horror who loves to experiment with style and structure in my work.

I am level 36! 🤓

Here we go, #HorrorWritersChat!
Today is the 1st October, beginning of spooky season, if you ever let it end, and that means it's International Day of Older Persons.
I like the idea of it being International Longevity Day but it isn't that yet. Today is about ageing and horror.
Today marks the first day of my month-long horror writing challenge over on Substack!

Several writers have already submitted stories for today's prompt, so now I'm sharing my own take on the concept!
