Difficulty = capability Vs barrier.
Disability = mismatched interaction between capability and barrier.
Accessibility = avoiding unnecessary mismatch between capability and barrier.

Quick take: Games should open with the settings menu prior to anything else including logos and splash screens. Or at least make the logos skippable and the pause menu available during opening cutscenes. Helps with volume and resolution issues and accessibility issues beforehand.

The Quarry has some really nice accessibility features as well. It's good to see it becoming more of a standard feature in games.

I'm such a big fan of the accessibility features in Insomniac's Spider-Man games. QTEs and counter systems can be tough to deal with due to my disabilities, so it's great to have them made easier without missing out on anything.

Personally I'd have said..

"Hey #gamedev one of the literal easiest wins you can get in your game is to not use tiny text. If you decide that upfront it's free, one of the simplest things you can do in terms of accessibility, and addresses the most frequently complained about accessibility issue."
ianhamilton.bsky.social
I'm not trying to say you had ill intent, I know it was coming from a very good place. There's just that extra context though.

And again there's that persistent harmful myth that if you just swap out your font to another one (one that doesn't help most dyslexic people anyway) then you've made your UI 100% accessible to dyslexic players. So you can see why it's important to avoid unintentionally perpetuating that myth right?
ianhamilton.bsky.social
Like not using tiny text, not using full caps, not using long line width, not using central or justified alignment.. they all have substantial impact on various demographics of dyslexia, and they all cost $0/0 lines of code
ianhamilton.bsky.social
Yeah exactly that's the point though, that doing so doesn't create a dyslexia friendly experience regardless of which font it is. It can still be an intensely dyslexia unfriendly experience unless a bunch of other things are also done, and those things are actually mostly easier than a font toggle ☺️

Some of the background journey through assault android cactus and unpacking would be good to cover too :)

How about a 30 minute talk for GAConf in April? Remote pre-record?

Yep that's entirely valid. However also I'm sure you can understand that being someone who is involved in a lot of accessibility awards - running, establishing, advising, judging - I don't appreciate the joke ☺️
ianhamilton.bsky.social
But also accessibility by design is a hot topic, and accessibility award worth its salt takes it into account

No, they are not more likely to, 0% is not more likely than 0%.

Another very important measure is ensuring online is an equitable an experience as possible rather than a secondary thing to the in person event, particularly as there are plenty of people who simply can't attend in-person events no matter what measures are in place.
ianhamilton.bsky.social
There are other measures in place too, such as bookings being capped at way under capacity, & using very spaced out cabaret layout. A number of attendees do mask. We've had 8 confs since lockdowns lifted, so far 0 reported infections at the event, and multiple infectious people caught by the testing
