Many years ago my partners mother, newly arrived in Australia from India, was asked to "bring a plate" to a morning tea she was invited to. This is Australian slang for bring a plate of food to share. Partners mum didn't realise and came with clean plates to eat off thinking she didn't have enough.

Having an immigrant spouse is hilarious sometimes because you realize there are things you just know and have never questioned. I just spent five minutes trying to explain the tradition of exchanging valentines (our nieces are in grade school). I didn't do a very good job. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️
