Watching the racist loons in the UK talking about how they aim to save the British Isles, it seems particularly timely to repeat a simple fact you may not be aware of.

Ireland is not a British isle.

A brief history of Ireland and why it is not a British isle.

Another bit of coverage for what we're at with Go Eve and DockChain.
A nice interview too, I think, by George Morahan.

One of the most unexpected climate-change reduction strategies I've ever heard of. Apparently, the contrails caused by high flying jets contribute to global warming and can be damn-near eliminated by slightly changing where planes fly.

I'm sure it's possible to to both of these things.
1. Make a good joke about Xmas Eve and Go Eve.
2. Make a half-decent AI-sourced Xmas video about DockChain and Santa.

I haven't managed either.
Nonetheless, I hope you all have a great break over the holidays.

Given that a lot of people consider a dog for Xmas, two thoughts.
1. Don't. At least not because it's Xmas
2. If you do, then adopt, don't shop.

Bizarre.

I would tend to regard a self-driving product that doesn't stop at traffic lights or stops signs to be somewhat incomplete. Less even than an MVP.

A potential level at which to morally rank the series of FF and FG governments that have created and maintained the housing crises in Ireland.

They make DJ Carey look like a great chap entirely. Is that about right?

Contradicts the judge a bit.

Chatting about AIs last night and seeing some interesting posts about inter-AI competition today....and I thought of the whole "what is consciousness?" question again. I suspect it's something really pretty basic. But hey, what do I know?

This is a terrible idea. And one that even the established EU car-makers will almost certainly come to regret - at least in the absence of other later additional measures to support them.

That ideas like these are apparently being normalized in the UK is about as scary as you can get.
Harry Cole of Sun interviews Connor Tomlinson - who advocates banning ethnic minority MPs from parliament

Tomlinson regrets sacrificing Suella Braverman but feels sure (on no evidence) she would sacrifice herself to remove the risk of Kemi Badenoch, Rishi Sunak, Priti Patel & Shabana Mahmood!

The whole idea of "Digital Transformation" and the excuses people make for not doing it both came up in conversation while I was in Detroit last week. Here's a little polemic I wrote on the topic several years ago.

Worth a smile. I guess I expected that Ireland would be high on one of the two axes, not on both.

And yes, if you dig at all you'll find the numbers are a Flakey (ehem).
December 15, 2025 at 7:39 AM
There is no excuse for this. Like there was no excuse for the Provos or the UVF putting bombs in pubs or on shopping streets.

It doesn't matter what someone else did somewhere else some other time. Not at all.
December 14, 2025 at 6:41 PM
I remember thinking that this wasn't a good idea. And even then my arguments probably weren't as dumb as the ones Michael Hobbes reports here. Hopefully weren't as dumb.
My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

We did this again. Same outcome. Bloody tasty.

Though I will comment that it's very subtle in taste and can take a LOT of pepper/other spices if you're that way inclined.
I made pasta carbonara the classic Italian way the other day. No cream. Just eggs and cheese. Bloody lovely. And a doddle to make. Why did I not learn this recipe before?
December 14, 2025 at 12:32 AM
As an occasional listener, it's a loss.

As someone concerned about freedom of speech, it seems a dreadful outcome. And, frankly, rather puzzling given how many other people with strong opinions never had a problem.
Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.

I didn't even know it was possible to "set a reminder on YouTube to watch a show".

I know it's possible to get YouTube to remind me when a show goes live, but that's different. Is it possible to set a reminder on YouTube to watch a show"?
I challenge you to think of one thing you would less like to do
December 14, 2025 at 12:20 AM
Clearly, it won't change anyone's mind. Clearly, it should.
Sadly, I know there are many apparently intelligent people and this will bounce righth off them.

And yes, I know the seal was the predator in that case, chasing birds. I know.

As arguments for staying on twitter/x go, this is a good one.
A quick sidenote about this; one reason I stay on X is specifically because of exchanges like this, where @davidjbier.bsky.social and I got a prominent government official to make a claim so outrageous that it’s now ricocheting around the internet and actively undermining official PR campaigns.
Bovino, the man overseeing mass deportations, publicly declared that we must all have our papers on us, at all times, or we could be stopped, harassed, kidnapped, and detained, as they did with the man in this case, who is a US citizen.

Even my German is enough to get the point.

Choices for Europe. Simple choices.
🇩🇪 German Chancellor Friedrich Merz drew a historical parallel, warning that if Ukraine falls, Russian aggression will not stop. He compared the situation to 1938, when appeasement after the Sudetenland was insufficient, suggesting Putin’s ambitions extend beyond Ukraine.
