Early voting for Atlanta starts *TODAY*

We have the opportunity to elect Rohit Malhotra, a thought leader in public policy to oversee our city’s legislative body, City Council.

Rohit is a proven bridge builder, connecting those across Atlanta with one another to do good.

The TAD extensions lists $1.5B for trails & greenspaces. Renewing the recurring 5-year TSPLOST has also been mentioned.

Most funding the past few decades is going to be private investment which yes correlates with north of the seatbelt.

But less than 20% of a fund for more than 50% of the city population when other funds are adamant on equitable spending, ie transit investment? That’s a tall order.

Better things are possible

It’s 100% intentional to try and flip the script for south & west Atlanta. That said… trails tend to lead to housing speculation & resident displacement- and parts of the Westside already have better trails than the east or north side.

That small gap is planned to happen by GDOT along with the Moreland at Arkwright project about to begin construction.

There’s money for both to be done well & complete- we just need to avoid “let’s do the bare minimum including not talk about design or various concepts as it would take shortest timeline”.

PATH said if we want specific items to request a new project. Nah. Scope is included, no new project needed.

Atlanta’s inequality line

Minimum Trolley Trail additions *should* = yellow & blue lines in Photo 1.

Especially as parts of trail can be funded & built with the Spoke budget, Photos 2 & 3.

Photo 4 is a stretch goal, however we should see what all can be included.

I don’t believe for a second we cannot at a minimum add everything with the yellow and blue dashed lines here in the first photo.

Especially as parts of trail can be funded & built with intersection budget, photo 2.

Photo 3 is stretch goal, however we should see what all can be included.

Install the missing sidewalks of the southern route first. Delivers a quick win and doesn’t cost much, will be even less if we don’t remove the existing sidewalk in front of Con Leche.

Then move to delivery of the northern route alignment- building out as much as possible with the remaining funds.
howephil.bsky.social
I mean yeah, but that’s a huge difference than going out of the way two blocks to go downhill then uphill again both directions instead of just continuing the preferred route *which we also have the opportunity to make better*.

Here’s my rec to ATLDOT:

D5 is right above the line of focus for the admin’s vision, unfortunately.

Battle of Atlanta trail of interest, but IMO should not be the only nor end all be all addition for D5, yet is the priority & main one included.

Little mileage north of the “seatbelt”.
howephil.bsky.social
Yep- tbh we’re kind of annoyed Amani Spur hasn’t delivered yet as it was supposed to deliver before last school year, IIRC.

Those connections are assets, too. We just don’t want them or items on our end of the trail dropped either, particularly when the money exists & has been planned forever.
howephil.bsky.social
Yes, though also need the trail along the route the kids already ride… simply building it other side of the street and not connecting the direct route to the BeltLine won’t change their routes as they ride in the street here as is as we try to make our streets calmer for all ages…
howephil.bsky.social
We know the budget also includes Amani spurs & absolutely support that.

But only 21-29% of total project budget going to the trunk line and not delivering the goal of the project = not good enough.
howephil.bsky.social
The south route doesn’t connect the BeltLine though & leaves gaps.

Also, budget is $2.8 million. Suggesting only $600-800k used for 0.3 miles of a longer planned route over 3 decades in the making is more than insulting AND doesn’t achieve the goal of the project.
howephil.bsky.social
The “problem” with south route IMO is they want to get rid of the existing wide sidewalks and replace them instead of just adding new infrastructure that will complement or upgrade more of what exists.

Where the budget is limited, I’d rather get more instead of just 0.3 miles inc. replace 1 block.

South option *does not have existing sidewalks* & definitely not wide sidewalks, which is why I’ve insisted on inclusion of missing sidewalks regardless of preferred route alignment.

Here you see the red indicates existing missing sidewalks.

North route- a truer bike alignment to BeltLine, however
